Iscariot Kindle & comiXology

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

What's to Love: If you've read S.M. Vidaurri's first original graphic novel Iron: Or, the War After or his issue of Jim Henson's The Storyteller: Witches, you might understand when we say his watercolor stylings are hauntingly beautiful to look at'they have a soft gentleness to them, yet can convey the most stark of imagery. His new OGN has us completely mesmerized once again, invoking comparisons to The Legend of Korra and the works of Hayao Miyazaki. What It Is: When Carson, a young girl living with cancer, is bestowed with age-old magic by a rebellious sorcerer named Iscariot, she must navigate her new powers, face the life she had thought she left behind forever, and take on the order of magicians who want to control her destiny. Carson discovers that Iscariot's intentions might not have been as altruistic as it first appeared, and learns the hard way that magic comes at a cost.

First, this is an absolute bargain for what you get: 160 beautiful, full-color pages in a hardcover edition. This is something I would keep on a table in my house since it's just so beautiful--even the cover has lovely gold foil accents. The artwork is what really sold me on this graphic novel; Vidaurri's style is intricate, colorful, and complements the story very well. I know I will be flipping through again and again to revisit my favorite panels. In terms of the story, I was quite honestly a little confused. I am going to reread to try to understand it better, but some of the plot points were a bit too vague for me to understand (and this is coming from a lit major). I didn't feel that the story was remarkable in any way, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The little plot summary isn't really how I would have summarized the story--it makes it seem like the focus is more on Carson and her powers, but I felt it was more about Iscariot and his. I also thought before purchasing this that it was geared toward young readers (like teens), but I wouldn't buy this for any kids I know, only because I'm not sure they'd understand it. Overall, the book is beautiful and the illustrations are where it truly shines. I'm glad I bought it, and I'm looking forward to reading it again and understanding it a little better!
