About the author
Roy William Thomas, Jr. (born November 22, 1940) is an American comic book writer and editor, who was Stan Lee's first successor as editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics. He is possibly best known for introducing the pulp magazine hero Conan the Barbarian to American comics, with a series that added to the storyline of Robert E. Howard's character and helped launch a sword and sorcery trend in comics. Thomas is also known for his championing of Golden Age comic-book heroes – particularly the 1940s superhero team the Justice Society of America – and for lengthy writing stints on Marvel's X-Men and Avengers, and DC Comics' All-Star Squadron, among other titles.
Thomas was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2011.

The Invaders comics tells the stories of a super-hero team consisting of Captain America, Bucky, Sub-Mariner, The Original Human Torch and his sidekick Toro. The stories are written by Roy Thomas and take place in the 40s during the World War II era. Roy Thomas had written nearly every Marvel Comic from the late 60s through the 70s with many of his comics becoming classics.
The stories in these issues are from a much simpler time with the longest story arcs lasting about 3 issues. However because of the simpler storylines and the carefree writing style, these comics seemed more fun.
Now just a little bit on the artwork. Most of these issues are drawn by Frank Robbins. Robbins had been a comic book artist since the Golden Age. However he had a bit of a revival during the 70s doing work for both DC and Marvel. When I was collecting these as a 10 something living outside of Boston, I loved seeing Captain America, Sub-Mariner and The Human Torch fighting Nazis together. All the while I kept thinking why cannot Marvel get a better artist for this book than this guy. Frank Robbins figures also looked like they moved in ways that the anatomy was not designed to move, like rubber bands. A far cry from other artist working for Marvel during the 70s. I kept thinking why not, Gil Kane, John Buscema or John Romita.....anybody but.
As time has gone by and I now hold this wonderful collection in my hands, I can actually appreciate the artwork of Frank Robbins. I look at it now forty years gone, I can see the amazing job that he did on this book. The composition of the panels are extremely well done, much better than many modern artist. Also now that I am older I can see that Frank Robbins was creating a cartoonish look with a purpose. Remember I mentioned these were simpler days in both stories and artwork, yes there were much more serious artist out there at the time, but I look at these panels now and they have such energy and creativity that have endured for forty years and probably beyond.
Oh and by the way Frank Robbins co created Man-Bat.
For a long time we had lived in the same place, and my mother had gone to the same grocery store which was just a couple doors down from a drug store that carried a slew of comics. I think the name of this place was "Paradise" LOL. Then we moved and the long treks to a little convenience store really began. I didn't mind the walk so much, it was the inconsistency. The place would carry the same titles for four or five months, and then just not have them for four or five months. This made my collection spotty and my disposition dark.
FINALLY, we have the complete Invaders collection! I now know what happened to end their first encounter with Baron Blood, how Thor got back to WWII Germany, how Spitfire got her powers... how Union Jack came into being-- both of them! This is '70s storytelling at its finest. The great plotting of Roy Thomas, the astonishing artwork of Frank Robbins... the fun-to-read exploits of some of America's greatest Golden Age comics heroes. Great stories, great art-- what else do you want?
Truth to tell, I still long for the days when a 100 Page Giant meant one new story and a slew of reprints, but I wouldn't trade today's trade paperbacks for them.
Update: much book than I expected. Fantastic condition. First edition of the Invaders.

This is the way Captain America used to look.....before his image was destroyed by the recent Marvel Movies
