Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2014
Through some comic book pseudo-science, Banner’s personality gets stored in one of Maria Hill’s ROB units, allowing him and the Hulk to interact with one another. The Hulk, for his part, still has a malleable personality, and this and other inconsistencies in the book so far are explained as some time traveling group messing with the Hulk’s history. It’s a decent enough explanation and one that will hopefully bear fruit. The next issue promises a combination of Wild West adventures and a fight with dinosaurs, and that looks like all sorts of fun.

The art is a great help to this issue, even though it doesn’t stand out quality-wise from anything else we’ve seen in the series so far. It’s more the representation of time travel, specifically in the interactions with the Tomorrow Man. From panel to panel, Banner and Maria Hill change clothing styles, shifting through a variety of different period outfits. This adds to the feeling that time is starting to unravel.

There are only two real complaints that I have with this issue. First of all, it’s a set-up issue, which means that nothing really happens here. We’re given a lot of explanations but very little action. However, the presence of a rampaging dinosaur in the Old West definitely implies that this will change in the next issue.

My second complaint is that this story feels like there should have been more foreshadowing. The Hulk’s shifting personality, for example, wasn’t called out as unusual until the previous issue. Had it been mentioned prior to that, it would have felt like Mark Waid was building toward something. As a much more minor complaint, it’s worth noting that the Banner and Hulk interacting shtick is something that was done fairly recently in Greg Pak’s run with technology that Banner invented. We could have saved time in this issue by just re-introducing that instead of devoted a couple pages to something new that did the exact same thing.
