Incredible Hulk Masterworks Vol. 11 (Incredible Hulk (1962-1999)) Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

Collecting Incredible Hulk (1968) #184-196 and material from Giant-Size Hulk (1975) #1 and Marvel Treasury Edition #5.

Hulk is the strongest! Why? Because it's hard not to be when you go from strength to strength with artists Herb Trimpe and Sal Buscema! Trimpe defined the incredible Hulk in an artistic tenure stretching from 1968 to 1975. When Sal Buscema took over the reins, not only did the series gain a great talent, but one that, unbelievably, would have a tenure longer than even Trimpe's! Add to that Len Wein writing some of his greatest Hulk stories and you've got a bona fi de Marvel Masterworks! The adventures include Hulk smashing his way through the Mole Man, the Gremlin, the Shaper of Worlds, Doc Samson, the Abomination...and, of course, the never-ending military machinations of Gen. "Thunderbolt" Ross!

The 11th Hulk masterwork volume brings us to the middle of the 1970s. This volume is a little on the light side as masterworks go these days, collecting 13 issues (#184-196) from 1975 and 1976, and coming in at about 270 pages. This is a period of creative stability for the title with Len Wein doing the writing and Herb Trimpe doing the art until relieved by Sal Buscema for the last three issues collected here.

Wein's stories range from very good to excellent. The best in this collection to my mind is the two part story featuring the Shaper of Worlds and Glorian and their ultimately unsuccessful attempt to bring peace and happiness to the Hulk. Close behind is the (unresolved in this volume) multi part story involving Ross' attempts to capture the Hulk so Bruce Banner can restore Talbot's conscious mind. Wein's plots and scripts are engaging enough to the reader that the latter gives him a pass on the inconsistencies built into these stories. Long time readers are aware that Hulk/Banner transformations and the constant dialing up and down of the Hulk's memory and intelligence happen when the plot requires them to but Wein sugar coats these instances so effectively the reader gives him a pass. Also well handled is the supporting cast who, more so than in most Marvel books, have to do a lot of heavy lifting. In this volume the relationship between Ross and daughter Betty gets an overhaul.

Trimpe is *the* Hulk artist for many and this volume amply demonstrates why that is. But Sal Buscema was an able successor. There are a handful of inkers in this collection (including four issues where Trimpe inks himself) but only Marie Severin's inks are distinctive (in a good way).

Extras are about average for a masterworks volume. There are the non reprint pages from the Hulk Marvel Treasury Edition, the cover of Giant Size Hulk #1, a house ad, and some original artwork. Dewey Cassell contributes the four page introduction.

Highly recommended to Hulk and '70s Marvel fans alike. Excellent stuff.

The late, great Len Wein wrote some of the best Hulk stories of the 70's. My favorite was the one about the Loch Ness Monster. It features Herb Trimpe's unused pencilled and inked cover, along with some great art, at the back of this book! It also has an intro by the author of The Incredible Herb Trompe, just recently released by Tomorrow's boks.

If you grew up in the 70's like I did, this book will offer you lots of memorys of long lost classics drawn by Herb Trompe. The Hulk was never drawn with such pathos and humanity ever since. To me, Herb's interpretation was the definitive Hulk. No one has ever matched it! So, true believers, all I can say is buy this one! You won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Smashing! More Puny Humans!

This book is a wonderful crossover point of the series, as Herb Trimpe's legendary run ended and Sal Buscema's equally impressive tenure began. And Sal began with a bang, tackling a Hulk/Abomination confrontation with a twist, and enemies become allies ( then enemies again, you can't fool the Hulk for long! ). Sal, for me, was always the ultimate Hulk artist, always capturing a wide range of emotions in his rendering of the big guy. His action scenes were always very dynamic and created a great sense of movement & impact.

As usual, this is a must have for any true Hulk fan.
