Ice Cream Man Vol. 1: Rainbow Sprinkles Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 670 ratings

Chocolate, vanilla, existential horror, addiction, musical fantasy…there’s a flavor for everyone’s misery. ICE CREAM MAN is a genre-defying comic book series, featuring disparate “one-shot” tales of sorrow, wonder, and redemption. Each installment features its own cast of strange characters, dealing with their own special sundae of suffering. And on the periphery of all of them, like the twinkly music of his colorful truck, is the Ice Cream Man—a weaver of stories, a purveyor of sweet treats. Friend. Foe. God. Demon. The man who, with a snap of his fingers—lickety split!—can change the course of your life forever. Written by W. MAXWELL PRINCE (ONE WEEK IN THE LIBRARY), with art by MARTÍN MORAZZO (SNOWFALL, GREAT PACIFIC). Collects ICE CREAM MAN #1-4

Editorial Reviews

Review

“ICE CREAM MAN is a trippy, twisted, and surreal ride into suburban horror, and it's just damn fun to read.” -Monkeys Fighting Robots

“A haunting horror tale that is both entertaining and eerie.”
-Impulse Gamer

“Prince is fast building an unusual resume in comics, and Morazzo's style recalls the precise line work of greats like Frank Quitely. You'll never look at ice cream trucks the same way after this one.”
-Paste Magazine

“You'll want a scoop of this comic because we're in for a treat.”
-Geek.com

"Don't let the bright colors and happy smiles on the cover fool you-this comic is an anthology horror series and it's downright terrifying. We loved it like we love mint chocolate chip ice cream, which is to say we loved it a lot."
-Nerdist

Review

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY -- Summer looms and the suburban air is filled with the cheery jingle of the approaching ice cream man in this caustic, ongoing multigenre anthology of single-issue stories by the same creative team. The purveyor of frosty treats is eagerly anticipated by all, but his friendly demeanor masks miraculous powers and a sinister omnipresence that links the tales. The lives of a young boy with a dark secret and a lethal “friend,” a desperate heroin addict, a washed-up one-hit wonder from the dawn of rock 'n' roll, and a young man wrestling with the fears and uncertainty of impending fatherhood all intersect with Rick, the ice cream man, on his route. As the stories progress, hints are dropped that there is more to Rick than simply serving as a Rod Serling for this contemporary Twilight Zone. Prince's work ups the ante from his earlier efforts (One Week in the Library) with a precisely-crafted page-turner, sporting crisp line work by Morazzo (The Electric Sublime) and the dreamlike colors of O'Halloran (Magnus). This is a perfectly bitter confection for those with a taste for short-form shockers, accented by adult language and content. (June)

Wow this was a little different then I was expecting but mostly what I was hoping for. I was expecting a fun 50s bmovie insired romp with experimental art and I got that. I also got some surprisingly touching and chilling storys and while I didn't break into tears or hesitate to turn the page out of horror all of them got me to care about the characters even ones I would just hate and be indifferent to in lesser writing and my eyes did water at times and the art is some of the most breath taking and purposeful i've ever seen.

Now this book isn't something i'd put on par with say neil gaimans the sandman and it gets off to a slow start and had a couple clunky moments towards the beginning and it didn't scare me as much as I would usually want a horror comic to(tbh though a lot of stuff people think is great doesn't) but if you're a fan of well realized experimental comics, old bmovies, or pre comics code horror books, or just want a comic to give you some chills, feels, and fun craziness, or just really want something different I think you'll find a lot to love or at least like.

Also if you're someone who hestitates on trying new books out of fear they'll have forced politics or social justice stuff in them this book has none.

This comic book is wonderful, it has wonderful artwork and dialogue, if you like short horror or cheesy stories this is the book for you

Great, but too short. The terse writing style adds to the tension and unsettling tone of the stories. However, this makes for a pretty quick read, and it's only four short issues. One of the craziest and cool comics I've read, and I want to read the whole series. Just wish there was more meat on the bone.

This book introduces a variety of characters with their own stories and are interconnected by a ice-cream man. If you like the Twilight Zone from the early fifties this is something for you.

This series is phenomenal. It's as dark and sinister as a book gets but captivating. The creators play with the graphic novel art form in an interesting way that enhances the story and keeps the series from becoming stale. The latest issue is as fresh as the first.

Great new comic! If you love stand-alone stories drenched in horror, great characters and beautiful art Ice Cream Man is where it's at! Beautiful in every way. Almost takes me back to my love for The Twilight Zone, Tales from the Darkside and Creepshow. Always looking forward to the next issue.

Very nice book, very practical to buy it from Amazon. Nevertheless, the cover and first 10 pages were "pasted" due to an ink blob, possibly an error in the printing. Unfortunately, I don't have a photo, I fixed the issue as I started to read it.
