Andrew MacLean, apparently effortlessly, blends the styles of Pendleton Ward and Mike Mignola. Somehow this book uses both the bright flat colors of Adventure Time, and the heavy black shading of Hellboy. Norgal is begrudgingly known to all as Head Lopper, a reputation that precedes him everywhere he goes. He is a brooding, badass, sword-wielding, monster-slaying old man of few words in the vein of Geralt of Rivia, Kratos of Sparta or old-man Samurai Jack. Sometimes he reminds me of Max from the Road Warrior. The world and it's politics are reminiscent of Westeros and Middle Earth, it's quality high fantasy with clear character motivations. All that not to say the book is just derivative, because while it reminds me of other things I love, there's nothing quite like Head Lopper. MacLean definitely makes the style, characters and world his own.

This Head Lopper collection is great on so many levels! First off, it's HEAD LOPPER! The comic itself is an awesome action/adventure comic with amazingly fantastic art. Andrew's artwork and storytelling style is the perfect for these stories, and just a joy to behold. Very few comics (I'm sad to say) have such captivating artwork that I feel compelled to just go back, after I'm done reading, and just stare at the artwork and marvel at it. I don't think I've seen artwork this compelling since the early Mike Allred Madman stuff, and anything Mike Mignola does (and if you like Mignola, you'll love what Andrew MacLean does). Anyhow, enough gushing about the artwork!

The story itself is a fun adventure with LOADS of action (they don't call this guy Head Lopper for nothin'), magic, and back stabbery! It's definitely unapologetically a fun fantasy action/adventure comic peppered with a humor. The sort of lighter feel of the artwork contrasts well with some of the darker or potentially gory subject matter. Basically, Andrew has found a way to make dark magic and decapitation fun for everyone. Just a joy and a riot to read.

For this collection in particular, Andrew has really given fans something special. Sadly when it comes to collections, most comics are just that, a collection, and don't give you anything deeper than collecting the comics that have already existed. Not so here. I would say that maybe a fifth of this book is material that is not just the collected comics. Most excitingly there is an added epilogue that is several pages. Then there is tons of cover art and pinups from various artists in the back, along with some great sketchbook pages (LOVE those). Each chapter now has a map added at their beginning to show Norgal's travels, brand new art for the cover (front and back) and just a lot of other little bits and pieces of added material that show how much love and care that Andrew put into this collection. You can really tell he wanted to give Head Lopper fans something MORE than what they already had (and I'm sure that helps sales, too). I have all the single comics, and I would have bought this collection anyway, but the fact that it has all this additional, non-fluff, material, just makes it that much greater. Like I said, it just demonstrates how much Andrew puts into this comic.

Long story short: this is a great comic-- probably my favorite at the moment-- and a really great presentation of it in this collection. I can't recommend it enough!

This is a fun read for sword and sorcery fans.
Personally, the artwork took some getting used to but suits the story perfectly.

I enjoyed this book. For some reason, it reminded me of the old Hammer films. No, there is no Dracula or Frankenstein, but the general mood felt like a hammer film. The art is incredibly appealing. The story took back seat to the art in my opinion, but I still found the characters and world intriguing. I liked this book enough to try another Andrew MacClean book, ApocalyptiGirl. It is also wonderful on all fronts! Can't wait to see more from Andrew!

Writer/Artist Andrew Maclean has created one of the most enjoyable comics of recent years with "Head Lopper". His drawing style isn't the typical approach to this type of material but it works beautifully here because Maclean uses his art to tell a story instead of the art calling attention to itself. He skillfully uses pacing, layout and clear but interesting storytelling to deliver his story and that's what comic book art is all about. Maclean's writing is equally good; giving us a serious story that doesn't wallow in grimness or gore. If you love the special joys that only the comic book artform can provide you need look no further than "Head Lopper".

this is such a solid series, the humor, the paneling, the writing. the thing that well sell this series all the way home to your doorstep is the art. I personally read the series listening to black sabbath instrumentals, so if that's your thing it really sets the mood. If you're interested go ahead and swing the sword and buy. I enjoyed every single page.

Head Lopper is the best graphic novel I have read in a long time. It is very satisfying and it's hard to find a book like this. At this time, there are three volumes, this is my favorite, although all three are great and highly recommended.

Characters and dialogue are well written, action is choreographed amazingly well in Andrew MacLean's stylized style that borrows a bit from Mignola, but is also uniquely his own. The colours are vibrant and fantastic as well.

Speaking of the plot, which is rather simple but effective, the cool thing I especially liked was how the story would jump a bit to reveal the antagonist's back story so that you understand how they came to be. Nothing is black and white, although it doesn't matter if you come up against the wrong side of Norgal the Head Lopper.

Buy this book it's up there as one of my favorites and I hope it becomes one of yours!
