Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps (2016-2018) Vol. 4: Fracture Kindle & comiXology

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 129 ratings

New leader of the Sinestro Corps, Soranik Natu, daughter of Sinestro, has seen to it that her brethren set aside their murderous ways for a new mission: to police the universe alongside the Green Lanterns!

Against all odds, this unlikely partnership seems to be working. Even Lanterns who recently wanted to murder each other with their bare hands—like Guy Gardner and Arkillo—are now working side by side.

But the fragile alliance is sitting atop a powder keg...and all it will take is one spark to ignite it. When it comes to light that a Green Lantern has murdered a member of the Sinestro Corps in cold blood, will the fragile alliance hold? Or will the Sinestro Corps return to the ways of their former leader...and destroy the Green Lanterns in their wake?

The DC Rebirth story of the Green Lantern Corps continues with Green Lantern artist Ethan Van Sciver returning to the Corps, along with creators Robert Venditti and Rafa Sandoval, for an explosive story that will leave heroes changed forever in HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS VOL. 4: FRACTURE. Colletcts HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #22-29.

The Green Lantern Corps series hits a new dramatic turning point as plot threads from the last two volumes finally come to fruition. After having confronted infamous Yellow Lantern Romat Ru (a known serial killer of children), Tomar Tu made a controversial choice that may fracture the new peace settled between the Green and Yellow Lantern Corps. Likewise, Kyle Rayner's discovery that Sarko, the time traveling villain of the previous volume, is actually Kyle's son from the future... and his mother is Soranik the daughter of Sinestro. Hiding the information from Soranik ostensibly to save her from the grief that has overwhelmed him, Kyle inadvertently sows new seeds of mistrust with his former lover just as tensions rise between the two Corps. John Stewart tries his best to hold the alliance together while the best team up of all time continues to from with Guy Gardner and Arkillo. After that plot is resolved there is a secondary arc that rounds out the book wherein Hal and the others have to help save the lives of Highfather and Orion from the New Gods when massive Nth Metal giants attack them. The book sows some seeds for the Dark Nights Metal event which is fun, but the main story with these giants is rather lame and ends the book on a bit of a let down after the excellent first arc. Also it must be mentioned that as others have pointed out the Nth Metal giants are clearly rip offs of Marvel's Celestials, like DC wasn't even subtle. Spoilers below.

Honestly, this book is great and I enjoyed reading it though I am disappointed that the status quo has been returned so soon. When it is revealed that Tomar Tu murdered Romat Ru in cold blood the Yellow Lanterns demand Tomar's head. With Soranik also learning of Kyle's deception the alliance fractures and the partnership is dissolved. Some of the recently introduced Yellow Lanterns who wanted peace do defect and officially join the Green Lanterns, but most of the familiar faces from the Yellow Corps follow Soranik off on their own after a brief throw down with the GLs (yes, sadly the awesome partnership between Arkillo and Guy also ends just as it was starting). Although I am disappointed the alliance was killed off so fast I am still enjoying Venditti's run and his work on the book. My main concern is Soranik's sudden about face and change in character. She goes from being a hero like we've known her to be since all the way back in the Sinestro Corps War era to a cheap villain who starts acting like her dad out of nowhere. Hopefully this change in her behavior is explained later, maybe as a corrupting influence of the Yellow Ring, but it does feel a bit too sudden for now. Also I was excited when Lyssa and Sinestro appeared near the end in the Anti Matter Universe as I wasn't a fan of them being killed off in the first volume.

Occasional fan of all things Green Lantern (at least since Sinestro Corps & Blackest Night) and picked this up on a whim. The artwork and colouring on this book are simply superb, some of the best comic art I have seen in fact. This volume contains two stories, the first I thought was very good, the second should have been even better (given the plot) but was resolved in an extremely cheap and cliche'd fashion - hence the reason I have knocked this down to 4 stars. However there is certainly enough here to make this a must for Green Lantern fans who favour trades over individual issues and I'll certainly be back to read the next volume.

The story has a lot that we love about Green Lantern: bold art, big space, crazy action, but the two basic stories that comprise it were both a little off. The first of these two, which focuses on the relationship between Green and Yellow Lanterns was the stronger of the two and was close to being a really strong story, save for one really dumb narrative decision that was crucial for the plot overall, but just so ludicrous that it left a sour taste in my mouth about the whole story. The second story was merely lackluster. It had some good action and a nice section for Hal Jordan, but the overall story felt very much "throw generic universe threatening event at the corps, let them respond, have big fight, fin). The first story had a lot more to it and could have been developed further (and presumably will be in coming volumes).

So: good in parts, but mixed story telling... It was "ok"

Bring back Sinestro, other than Darksied,he remains the great villian, forever hating the green lantern corps.
His series was excellent.

They ended the two Corps alliance way to soon and basically ended the threat of the Sinestro Corps at the same time. The new gods story arch is boring and pointless. If you want a great example at just how bad the pacing is in Rebirth, read this. If you want a good green lantern story, then you're not going to get one here.

I liked it but didn't hate it. The addition of the New Gods maybe a bit confusing for some who don't follow the Green Lantern story closely. I thought that separating the Sinestro/Lantern corps happened far too early in this run and the events surrounding this break up were rather anti-climactic. I would have loved to see the team up continue and stay together for a while because it was compelling and interesting to read about, It was unique. Instead add additional threats and storylines that possibly threaten the alliance, Go any other route than this. I felt they took a big step backstory wise because now it's just another Green vs Yellow fight again and that is beyond stale.

And what sucks is that the break up happens rather early in the volume and nothing is really said of it for the remaining comics in the volume.

This book collects Issues 22-29 and contains two separate stories:

The first half of the book shows the inevitable crumbling of the alliance between the Green Lanterns and the Sinestro Corps. It's a story that's full of emotional moments and puts several characters including Kyle Rayner, Soranik, and John Stewart through their paces. It's a story that has some great twists and some stunning emotional moments. I have troubling a couple of scenes including one character switching to a villain. Still, it's a well-told tale.

The second half is the Fall of the Gods, and it finds the survivors of New Genesis hunted and the Green Lanterns having to save them. This story is a great action piece and each of the major human lanterns plays a key role.

It should be noted that the art throughout this volume is just great. The stories come to life and it's skillfully used to add emotional impact. Another great read from one of DC's greatest series.

The green and yellow lanterns were never going to stay together-it was a matter of time. The unexpected viciousness of Sinestro’s daughter surprised me and sets the stage for future encounters with Kyle and the GLs. It was the new gods story line that reminded me why I love Hal and the Green Lantern stories. Epic. Heroic. With big bad guys and clever solutions to interesting dilemmas. I’m a fan again.
