Green Lantern: The Silver Age Vol. 1 (Green Lantern (1960-1986)) Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 120 ratings

Perhaps the most famous of all the Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan put on the lantern’s ring for the first time in 1959. A re-envisioning of the original crime-fighting Green Lantern (Alan Scott), created by John Broome in the 1940s, this new Green Lantern was a science fiction adventurer. He battled aliens, giant monsters, wealthy sociopaths out to steal his power ring...and the efforts of his lady love, Carol Ferris, to discover his true identity. As the Green Lantern of the Silver Age of comic books, Hal Jordan captured the imagination of a space-minded society of the ’50s and ’60s.

GREEN LANTERN: THE SILVER AGE VOLUME 1 collects the adventures of Hal Jordan as he takes on the responsibility of the ring and the lantern for the first time in SHOWCASE #22-24 and GREEN LANTERN #1-9.

About the Author

Born in 1913, John Broome started out his writing career selling science fiction stories to the pulp magazines of the 1930s. His agent for those stories was Julius Schwartz, who in 1945 would join DC Comics' staff as an editor and, over the next forty years, be responsible for some of the most innovative comics of his time. Broome's first comic book sale was to Fawcett Comics for the South Seas adventure strip, Lance O'Casey. More work for Fawcett followed, including on Captain Marvel, before World War II interrupted his writing career. When he was released from the service, he looked up his old friend Julius Schwartz at DC and, for more than twenty years, made his creative home there, writing countless scripts for numerous features, including the Golden Age Green Lantern, Justice Society of America, Captain Comet, the Silver Age revival of Green Lantern, the Atomic Knights, Star Hawkins, Rex the Wonder Dog, Detective Chimp, and a variety of science fiction tales. Broome retired from comic boos in the 1970s and settled in Japan where he taught English. John Broome died in Thailand in March 1999.

No consistency to DC's Silver Age dust jacket design
1 Star
No consistency to DC's Silver Age dust jacket design
DC changed their dust jacket design for their Silver Age and Golden Age omnibuses several years ago. It was annoying that they changed it since it did not match the existing design of an ongoing series, but I accepted it. When they released new editions of old Silver Age or Golden Age omnis (like the Superman Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 1 recent reissue), they did so in the new trade dress. Fine. That's apparently the direction they're going now. But today they released a new edition of the Green Lantern Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 1 but with the old dust jacket design. See my photo to understand how unbelievably annoying and incompetent this is. Is everyone in the DC Design Department asleep at the wheel? What is the logic of their design system now? Do they just now arbitrarily go back and forth between the two design systems? If design consistency is important to you, then I highly recommend that you not buy this book until they explain their thinking. Such complete and total incompetence.

Stories and art that set the tone for 70+ years. These stories are why Geoff Johns brought back Hal.

I wasn't familiar with the origins of the Green Lantern but this introduction was an interesting series. I think another character was the Green Lantern in the 1970s but I enjoyed Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern.

I had to make adjustments reading this version of GL. Both he and Carol are dumb as cluck stupid. That is how they were written at the time. Stories that focus on the alien of the week are a little better. It seems that DC didn't have a firm grip on GL until the later 1960s-1070s. In the early books he is very one dimensional. There are some good stories but it was a slog. I like GL for who he evolved into. This book focuses on his starting point. Dimond in the rough.

A wonderful collection of the Green Lantern silver age comics from the 1950's - 1960's!! Most people could never afford to buy the original books, but here you get reprints of Showcase #22, 23 & 24 and The Flash #1-9!! If you were to try to purchase these, you'd be out hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars!! This is well worth the price!!

DC Silver Age Collections are the most finest and important pieces of modern day superhero art ever. I recommend them--even GREEN LANTERN--VOLUME 1.

Good first book of Green Lantern of the silver age. Stories are short and a good mix of action and story telling.

I found the frequent references to his "Eskimo mechanic" as a little jarring, in the current PC climate, but otherwise enjoyed this as an interesting backgrounder on the Green Lantern character.

Fun trip down nostalgia lane. I love reading these silver age stories so I can relive those days and those stories that got me hooked on comics. Seeing these stories once again I noticed how well they survived the years. Very basic storylines but fun nonetheless. Gil Kane's artwork was and still is amazing..I just love this silver age series that DC has started.
