About the Author
Artist Michael Jon Grell quickly made a name for himself in comics by tackling one of its most difficult assignments—the seemingly infinite universe of the Legion of Super-Heroes. From there, Grell joined Dennis O'Neil for a well-received Green Lantern and Green Arrow revival and might have become a regular contributor to the Batman office if his creation Warlord had not taken off to become DC's most successful fantasy title ever. Grell (whose other works of note include Jon Sable, Freelance, Starslayer, and Green Arrow) still writes the occasional Batman tale.

I've been reading DC's "Greatest Hits" lately. I got turned onto The Longbow Hunters through the recommendation of some fellow comic book enthusiasts. I'm glad I heeded their advice. This is a great story that, in my opinion, definitely qualifies as a classic of the genre. If you enjoy a good crime drama, check it out.

Since Arrow is all the rage on TV, I picked this up wishing to learn more about the character. I was impressed with the writing and art, and happy to see some of the things which were examined in the show: namely Shadow and when in the comic time line did Ollie go from his Robin Hood type costume to the hood that he now wears.
Arrow fans be warned: there is no mention of Roy, Diggle, Felicity, Sarah, Malcolm, or Thea. Still, that shouldn't put you off of a captivating and well told story.

This is a really great graphic novel, with great writing and a distinctive mesmerizing art stye. the story will have you on the edge of your seat as Green Arrow tries to stop a series of killings in Seattle. Things get even more exciting from there, and the result is great story you'll never forget.

After watching several episodes of Arrow . I decided to go back re-read Mike Grell's masterpiece The Longbow hunter. I was not disappointed. A well thought out plot line, with a more mature main protagonist. looking to find a new meaning to his life. I found it to be just as inspireing as when I firstnread it back in the eighties

This is the start of the Mike Grell run on Green Arrow -- a must-have for Green Arrow fans

After relocating to Seattle, Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance settle in and getting the feel of the land. When Dinah winds up hospitalized after tangling with drug dealers, Oliver crosses the line. But he's not the only one on that side of the line. Shado, a ninja archer, has her sights set on some of the same people...
Green Arrow has never been a favorite of mine but I've been a Mike Grell fan for a long time. I had some Amazon points to spare and took the plunge on this one about thirty years after the fact.
Along with Dennis O'Neil's run on The Question, Mike Grell's run on Green Arrow was a lynch pin of DC's mature readers' line of the late 1980s, a precursor to Vertigo. Also like The Question, it was way ahead of its time. Gone are the gimmick arrows of yesteryear. Mike Grell's Green Arrow shoots to kill. The inclusion of Shado was a nice touch, providing a nice counter point to Ollie's new methods after Black Canary is nearly killed.
One of the most interesting aspects of the story is that it's fueled by Oliver's mid-life crisis. Speedy, Oliver's former ward, has a kid, making Oliver something close to a grandfather, making him reconsider a lot of things.
Rather than making Green Arrow grim and gritty for the sake of being grim and gritty, The Longbow Hunters takes Green Arrow in a logical direction given he's a guy shooting crooks with a bow and arrow. Now that I've dipped my toes in this run, I'm going to have to see it through until the end. Four out of five stars.

Honestly, this is one of the best graphic novels I've ever read and easily the best Green Arrow book I've read. A fantastic read from beginning to end with a killer story and fantastic artwork. The story is a bit dated (24 years later will do that) but it still crackles with a timeless energy.

Great compilation of the Green Arrow from the 80's. I live in Seattle and it is awesome to see how different it looks in the comics in comparison to today. The story line reminds me of the dark knight trilogy with less emphasis on the gadgets and more emphasis on Oliver's humanity. Definitely worth the purchase.

Green Arrow at his best
