Grave Business and Other Stories Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

Even in an era of explicit horror films, "Ghastly" Graham Ingels still delivers a shock to readers with his grisly depictions of the stomach-churning fates of the evil men (and women) in these stories-leavened only by a sly wink to the reader and a generous dose of dreadful puns. Ingels' brushwork oozes ominously across every panel, perfectly setting the mood for the shudder-inducing fates of such corrupt characters as the sadistic asylum director, the political candidate who murders his opponent, the ventriloquist with the homicidal "dummy," the millionaire who persecutes an aged junkman, and the medieval duke who runs over a young boy with his carriage then taxes the peasants to pay for cleaning up his victim's blood. Like every book in the Fantagraphics' EC line, Grave Business and Other Stories superbly showcases these classic comic book masterpieces and enhances the reader's experience with commentary and historical and biographical detail from EC experts.

"All of these books are essential purchases for comics fans... These are the books that best show off how EC took genre stories seriously, striving to create comics that didn't treat readers as naive or ignorant." - The Los Angeles Times

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Graham Ingels was the master of the macabre, a genius at delivering the tremendously terrible in horrific and glowing detail. His handful of comics, nearly entirely horror stories and nearly every one delivered at E.C. Comics, were genuinely gory and delightfully dreadful.... For anyone who loves classic American comic art, this comic is a must-read."
Jason Sacks, Comics Bulletin

About the Author

Graham Ingels (1915–1991, b. Cincinnati, Ohio), began working for EC Comics, drawing Western, romance, and crime stories, in 1948. But it was with the advent of EC’s horror titles that "Ghastly" Graham Ingels's detailed work perfectly evoked the proper mood for the kind of wickedly macabre stories EC excelled at, and it made him a fan favorite. Ingels drew the lead feature for every issue of Haunt of Fear starting with #4, but his work, "hosted" by his signature character, the Old Witch, appeared regularly in all three EC horror titles and in Crime SuspenStories. In 1989, Ingels returned briefly to the comics landscape when he created a series of oil paintings featuring the Old Witch.

Albert B. Feldstein (1928–2014; Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame, 2003) was a triple-threat writer, artist, and editor, renowned for his work on such titles as Weird Science, Tales From the Crypt, and Mad magazine. He received the Bram Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

I have vivid memories of going through my older brother's comic book collection when I was kid. He was a big fan of the many different Marvel superheroes and rarely missed picking up the latest Spider Man or X-Men offering. He would also hit garage sales with my grandma and use his allowance to pick up box after box filled with comics that some parent was selling off now that their kid had grown up and didn't read them anymore. Years later, these same grown up children would lament when they would learn that their old comic collections was now worth a king's ransom, but was sold off by their unknowing parents years ago. While I did enjoy Marvel's superheroes (The Hulk was the one I gravitated towards), the ones that I really liked were the older EC comic's The Haunt of Fear, The Vault of Horror, and Tales From the Crypt. I would be mesmerized for hours going through the dog-eared copies that had the most amazing illustrations. Keep in mind, this was the late 1970s/early 1980s and kids read their comics - over and over. They didn't keep them in pristine condition in protective plastic. So read those EC tales I did and I loved them. When I stumbled onto the Grave Business collection on Amazon, I couldn't click BUY fast enough. And so the walk down Memory Lane began...

Grave Business is chock full of gothic tales of revenge and mean people getting what they deserve. Sure it all follows a predictable formula, but the stories are so entertaining, so reminiscent of horror stories you've read from many of the greats. Then, you realize that those stories were written many years after Graham Ingels drew them for EC and you can't help but wonder how many horror authors were heavily influenced by those beautifully drawn macabre tales. Grave Business also includes the tragic story detailing how horror comics were considered to be the root of all evils amongst children and that there was even a congressional hearing that caused the comic industry to impose a code of ethics that basically sounded the death knell on horror comics, EC, and the lively hood of their talented creators. Entertaining AND educational. I loved Grave Business and I think you will too.

It's Graham Ingels in sharp black and white. What's not to like? Not much.
These stories are from 1951-52 so this collection is from right before FB's other Ingels collection, "Sucker Bait".
Legendary work, respectful presentation!
My only itty bitty complaint: please put the info of what date and lists the original comic which contained the story larger and on the first page of each story. That stuff is TINY, but probably interesting to most folks who buy this so please enlarge it and remind me often where I am in time.
Oh and a nice helping of yapping about how great Graham Ingels and EC comics are (as usual for this series). Great scholarship and fun to see what expert fans of this stuff think.

Excellent reproductions of one of my all-time favorite pre-code E.C. comic artists - "Ghastly" Graham Ingels! My brother bought the entire boxed set of "Tales From the Crypt" back in the early 80s, and I remember ever-so-slowly paging through those wonderful, museum-quality printed atrocities as one would an ancient Family Bible or some newly discovered Red Sea Scrolls - and now, some thirty-odd years (and odd, they certainly were) later, I've bought each EC artist's FANTGRAPHIC BOOKS release, waiting patiently (with white knuckles and clenched teeth) for the Ghastly art of Mr. Ingels to show up - and boy oh boy, it's everything I'd been hoping for! Gasp! Good Lord, it's...Choke!

2.0 out of 5 stars QUALITÉ DE PAPIER ET NOIR ET BLANC
Reviewed in Canada on July 27, 2022

5.0 out of 5 stars Joyita del horror. Gran ghastly Ingels
Reviewed in Spain on May 16, 2019
