I’ve been aware of Golgo 13 for decades, even when I didn’t know it. The Professional was an anime title that had been around back in the day when anime was still referred to as Japanimation. It never interested me, and I never watched it. As I got deeper into manga though Takao Saito’s Golgo 13 frequently got mentioned. I gave it a try, and quickly became hooked. For a lover of the spy genre, Golgo 13 hits all the right notes; all the excitement of a typical espionage/spy story, yet more grounded in realism, and often with authentic historical back drops that had me constantly going to google to look up incidents to see what was fact and what was fiction.
The writing in these stories is superb. Saito never writes down to his readers, he’s writing to a mature audience that he knows can handle the level of tale he’s crafting. If you are in that demographic, then give Golgo 13 a shot (no pun intended). You’ll wish someone else would translate and publish more of these stories.
