Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is a great example of all-ages material because it is both intelligent and exciting without ever resorting to foul language or violence." --Bleeding Cool

"Never before has a black and white comic been quite so colorful, in both creatures and prose. It's also one of those rare books where no matter what age you are you want to root for the goofy looking hero." --The Fandom Post

"Farlaine is the perfect mix of great writing and art." --Fortress of Solitude

PUG GRUMBLE may or may not be a pen name.

As a toddler, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Pandas.

Pug went to school, learned things, and held many unfulfilling jobs (the best was at a maple syrup bottle factory).

One day, Pug started drawing a comic. That comic became Farlaine the Goblin (farlaine.com), an all-ages series about a wandering tree goblin shaman trying to find a forest of his own.

He then wrote a novel called Ouch, a comical and quirky love story between a masochist, a sadist, and a klutz. It’s dark, but hysterical.

Pug’s next comic is a hard science-fiction story about snack food. His next novel is going to be a murder mystery about t-shirts.

Pug dreams of living in Saratoga Springs on a pug farm, going on long dog walks, chugging a lot of coffee, eating delicious croissants, and writing and drawing the fun adventures of pug goblins and popcorn cowboys.

This is by far the best "comic" book for children (and adults) that I have read in years. Within just a few pages I was hooked by the fairy-tale quest of this little goblin and his tree to find a forest to take care of. The drawings are superb and I was constantly torn between dawdling over the meticulous art work and rushing to the next page to keep up with Farlaine's quest. He has previously visited 100 lands without success and after these three lands only had seven left to explore. I highly recommend this for children of 4 and older and for adults who have not lost their sense of adventure along with a willingness to indulge in a little silliness. Besides, graphic novels are increasingly an important art form. Comics are not just for kids. Yet all of us, even a 75-year-old like myself, need to be reminded from time to time that finding one's place in this world where we can achieve our true destiny is a goal never to be abandoned.

I had the pleasure of meeting the writer/artist of this series during the first day of Boston Comicon 2016, where I originally purchased book 1. I brought it home that evening and gave it to my 7 year old son to read and asked him to tell me if he enjoyed it or not. He stayed up reading in his bed with a flashlight, and immediately asked for the next one. I went back the next day and purchased books 2-4, which he has now read all of and is anxiously awaiting the 5th in the series which was just released! It's nice to have this digital copy available now so we can bring Farlaine with us everywhere we go. We'll be picking up Book 5 in just over a week at Kids Con New England (sorry Amazon, but we like the doodle in the front of the book that we got in person from the writer). If you don't have the opportunity to meet this gentlemen and purchase the series, it's well worth it to get it through Amazon or however! Now we've all read the stories (me, my wife, and both of my kids), and it's a fun adventure for adults as well as kids!

Great little story, wonderful artwork. The drawing style reminds me a little of the old "Pogo" cartoons. It's a very kind, gentle fable about a tree goblin, Farlaine (pronounced Far-Lin), and his companion, a little tree he carries around in a backpack. They're looking for a forest to call their own. The tree doesn't talk, but Farlaine talks to her, and they meet a lot of interesting people along the way.

Suitable for all ages. Nonviolent storyline, can be read aloud to younger kids, older ones can read it for themselves.

Estimated reading level 8-10 year olds (or younger if they're advanced readers)

Trying to shop for my 10year old nephew is very difficult. I hit a home run with this, he read it over and over again as soon as he got it. I read it too, and thought it was a good story. Interesting enough to keep a boys attention.

A great little gem in the making. I've read the first three issues a few times over and keep finding more things to be happy about. It holds up well to repeat reads.

The trade is larger than the original comics, so it presents the artwork big.

Worth reading.
