An Englishman residing in Las Vegas, I am a writer of comic books and graphic novels. And a couple of films. My most noted comics work is Starman for DC Comics, currently being collected in the New York Times best selling series of six Starman Omnibuses. I now work for Marvel Comics, a tenure that began with (now collected) runs on Fantastic Four and All-New Invaders. I am currently writing Scarlet Witch and Squadron Supreme.

In my spare time I tend to waste it.

The first two pages set the tone for this story arch. It's not going to be pretty it's not going to be fun. In fact it's going to be as real as if gets and I love the journey.

For the past decade, I have disliked the Fanastic Four. The writing and artwork has been subpar and boring. Stopped collecting this series for the longest time, until this set of issues was released. Finally, the FF is getting good again...too bad it's ending.

I have not read FF for along time so I thought this was a good point to jump on board and get some back up explanations before I went onto Volume 2 with the new writer.

I so much wanted to like this book. You wouldn’t believe it today, but oh so many years ago, before all this Spidey-, X-, and Avengers-mania the FF actually were the flagship title of Marvel. “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine”. I devoured their adventures as a kid. Later the book grew dull and duller, and then Civil War gave me the last punch.
So what I saw from the previews of Robinson’s new arc looked promising and I decided to give it a try. And the elements are all there: the Thing trying to renew his relationship with Alicia, the portrayals of the four characters in a very nostalgic way; even Herbie the Robot has his cameo.
The FF are put on trial for every damage they have caused since their formation. So the Thing went through a brick wall going to their first meeting ever. This was 60s show-off just to demonstrate how strong he was. But here it is taken serious. For me this approach does not work. You have to accept that comic books were different half a century ago and you can take that history with sympathy and irony, but not literarily. Or you can ignore it and just do something completely different.
I mean the story is not a bad thing by all means and there is some mystery building. The art of Kirk is flawless. But what was missing for me was the soul of it all. It just did not work for me. Those are not my Fantastic Four. Neither are they a Fantastic Four for the 21st century because the baggage is all there. I will not purchase the next volume.

James Robinson is usually a fine comics writer but "The Fall of the Fantastic Four" is a weak outing despite some solid work by the art team led by Leonard Kirk. Part of the problem is Robinson is still dealing with the aftermath from Jonathan Hickman's amazing run. But part of it comes from misreading the Fantastic Four. Marvel's premier superhero family has always been about exploration--not treading ground which has already been covered. Robinson focuses on covering what has already been covered: a legal threat to take the children away from Sue and Reed Richards, bad relations with the government, the Human Torch losing his way, Ben Grimm trying yet again to make things work with Alicia Masters. All of this has been covered before, making Robinson's efforts seem stale. Despite some strengths--including the art--this was a disappointing book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Four at their best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 20, 2015
I was impressed by the first volume of this series. I have followed the Fantastic Four since they first appeared as Marvel's First Family in the 1960s and amazed at how writers can come up with continually fantastic storylines... and this book was no exception. When an alien invasion from Franklin Richards, the son of Sue and Reed, imaginary pocket universe invades Manhattan, the intrigue and fall of the Fantastic Four begins. The five issues contained in this volume are wonderfully illustrated and I ended up reading the graphic novel all in one go! Now I need volume 2 to see what happens next...
