I like the storyline. It was cool and it great to read the original version of the new Ff since they brough them back recently.

by Walt Simonson, writer, artist and zany creator.

What? No reviews yet? Has no one else picked up this exceptional volume of tales? For shame!

In this very package, you have a "new" FF, featuring the hottest characters at that time in Marvel (Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Spidey and Gray Hulk ) drawn by the exceptional Art Adams, pitching in when Uncle Walt fell behind on being able to write and draw the book monthly.

Then, Walt Simonson's Dr. Doom! Wow. Totally capturing the Lee/Kirby vibe with fresh new ideas and the famous Simonson explosively powerful art. Plus, more time travel! A Judge Dredd parody! And more ideas than you can shake a stick at.

Sadly, this book ends Walt's tales on FF. It also includes many stories by the succeeding creative team. They are okay tales, but suffer by comparison to the first half of the TPB.

Still, those "lost tales" by Simonson are worth every penny! Buy it today!

While this collection does have a few issues of "The New Fantastic Four" (Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Hulk, and Spider Man) they only appear for a brief period in the beginning of this collection. This collection is heavy on the original Fantastic Four, which is fine, but I wish I had known that prior to purchasing it. I would have preferred if the majority of this collection focused on GR, Wolverine, etc.

The Opening Story Is - indeed excellent, as Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Spider-man, and narcissistic Grey Vegas-loving Hulk, the Hulk as macho Fixit-man. The Punisher cameo is classic. The Mole-man suddenly seems like an under-used character from whom the right writer could weave quite a world, but, while I may be the biggest Walt Simonson fan this side of Louise Simonson, the rest of the book felt like one big meh, and, strangely: I missed the Art Adams art - another oddity for this Simonson fanatic.

Walt Simonson's run on Fantastic Four, while not as legendary as his one on Thor, is still held in very high esteem, so it's nice to get the rest of that run collected in Epic format following the already-released Into the Time Stream. Forming Volume 21 in the complete chronology, this one collects issues from 1990-1992 and contains some real high points.

The volume kicks off with the titular New FF story, which has a squabbling team-up of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk and Ghost Rider step in when the 'real' FF are indisposed, in a story involving Skrulls, the Mole Man and many a giant monster. It's great fun and also features some wonderful Arthur Adams art in a rare monthly appearance.

There are also tangles with the Time Variance Authority, who object to the team's many jaunts through time, and the New Warriors, due to one of those classic hero vs hero misunderstandings, among others, but the real reasons to pick up this volume in particular are two storylines in particular.

The first resolves the long-running romantic subplot that had seen the Human Torch married to the Thing's longtime love Alicia Masters for several years. This being superhero comics, it comes to a head in truly dramatic, unsuspected style that really shakes up the family dynamics of the series.

The second, more traditionally, returns the FF's (indeed, comicdom's) greatest villain in awesome style as Doctor Doom returns to reclaim what is his. Not an impostor, not a Doombot - no, true believers, this is the man himself and he launches straight into giving the Four a real fight for their lives, including a bravura issue where he and Reed duel through time, requiring the reader to hop back and forth through the pages in order to follow them.

Extras include a swimsuit issue pinup, fake ad, and article, the cover and pinups from the FF: Monsters Unleashed trade paperback, sketches as well as an introduction from the X-Men Legends vol. 3 trade by Art Adams, and a newly written afterword by editor Ralph Macchio. A handsome volume for a pretty darned decent run of Marvel's flagship title.
