Family Tree Vol. 1: Sapling Kindle & comiXology

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 127 ratings

When an eight-year-old girl begins to transform into a tree, her single Mom, troubled brother, and possibly insane grandfather embark on a bizarre and heart-wrenching odyssey across the back roads of America, desperately searching for a way to cure her horrifying transformation before it’s too late.

Bestselling, award-winning writer JEFF LEMIRE (ROYAL CITY, DESCENDER, Sweet Tooth) and superstar artist PHIL HESTER (Shipwreck, Green Arrow) come together for FAMILY TREE, a genre-defying epic about the lengths a mother will go to keep her children safe in a world of unspeakable horrors.

Jeff Lemire and Phil Hester working the horror angle to perfection. Short first volume (4 issues), but it is enough to hook the reader, leaving you wanting to know more. Phil Hester is one of the best visual storytellers working in comics right now, and when you combine that with Jeff Lemire's gift of coming up with new stories and naturalistic dialogue, you know the resulting pages are going to keep you coming back for more.

Jeff Lemire has been dominating the comic medium as well as my graphic novel purchasing for the past year. From his mainstream works with Marvel and DC, to his Black Hammer universe at DarkHorse, to his indie works. Everything I've read, I've enjoyed. This collection is no exception. In this collection Jeff Lemire takes his talents to Image comics for a horror comic. Lemire is joined by one of my favorite artists, Phil Hester. Here's some feedback:
1. I purchased the collection on Amazon for around $10.
2. The book is released by Image Comics
3. The book is written by Jeff Lemire with art by Phil Hester
4. This graphic novel collects the first 4 issues of the series.
5. It's a quick read. I read it in one sitting and it left me immediately wanting more.
6. <SPOILERS> The story focuses around a family who experiences life-threatening situations due to a family member's illness. It's a story about family, the afterlife, the supernatural, cultish pursuers, mystery and their family tree.

I believe a second volume has already been released and it will be on my hit-list for 2021. It's a great start to what hopes to be an intriguing story with twists and turns.

5.0 out of 5 stars A série mais instigante do Lemire
Reviewed in Brazil on October 20, 2021
