About the author
Bill Willingham never fought a desperate and losing battle in a good cause, never contributed to society in a meaningful way, and hasn't lived a life of adventure, but he's had a few moments of near adventure. At some point in his life Bill learned how to get paid for telling scurrilous lies to good people, and he's been doing it ever since. He lives in the wild and frosty woods of Minnesota.

I read a lot of comics, graphic novels and whatnot. And whenever anybody ever asks me what to read next, I always say, Fables. It's long. It will make you weep in both joy and sadness, it will make you laugh, bite your nails, shout in victory, shout in frustration, and conjure up any emotional response a book can conjure, and more.
This series was epic. Homer could learn a thing or two from Bill Willingham. In a series as long as this, the most important thing is character development. These characters ran so deep, they became a part of my life. You leave knowing their characters so well they seem like friends. You can ask yourself, "what would Snow do?" And be able to com up with a real, complex answer. These characters are more complex than some people I know.
And these people drive a story more intriguing and better told than almost anything I've watched or read before, sharing a stage with monuments such as Harry Potter or The Godfather.
Their are characters that I will never forget adventuring with. Never before has a series given me so many to remember.
Thank you, Bill Willingham.
Both the front and back covers fold out: three pages features 177 of the series' characters. (You won't be able to identify them all without the guide), with credits on the fourth page.
pp 1-78 This section concludes the three-part Rose Red vs. Snow White story. The art is by the usual team of Buckingham, Leialoha, and Pepoy (and some inking by Dan Green and Jose Marzan Jr.), and though the artwork seems a little rushed, I won't ding the book a star because of it.
pp 79-152 twenty-one more mini stories, including a lot of "last" stories (one is a 4 page text story featuring Snow's daughter Blossom) and a recap of the prophecy of Snow's children. Includes art by Russ Braun, Mark Schultz, Gene Ha, Neal Adams, Michael Allred, Lan Medina, Bill Willingham (yes, he draws too; you still haven't read Elementals yet?), Bryan Talbot, as well as Buckingham, Leialoha, Pepoy, and others.
pp 153-154 Goodbye from Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham. (Text)
pp 155 a photo of, um, stuff
pp 156-157 guide to the characters on the cover
pp 158-160 script sample
pp 161-163 black and white artwork
pp 164-168 Creator biographies, ads, indicia page
The first third of this trade paperback covers the final story arc of the battle between Rose Red and Snow White. Call me blood-thirsty but I thought it was a bit anti-climatic. I mean I am glad everyone got their happy ending (for the most part) but with these huge armies amassing...well...I was kind of hoping for a good battle and some bloodshed.
The second two-thirds of the book are “The Last Story Of…” stories where all of the other characters get their final story and we find out where their lives are going. These were all well done, but again kind of anticlimactic after the big build up in Happily Ever After.
The illustration continues to be very well done. I enjoyed the afterward as well; which states some crazy facts and figures about the series. I loved the fold-out cover and how it shows all of the characters who have been involved in the series (there’s a key in the back of the book in case you have trouble recognizing them all).
This was a well done conclusion to the series and does tie everything up nicely (if not as explosively as I had hoped). It’s a bittersweet ending for me; I have really enjoyed this graphic novel series and it was the 2nd graphic novel series I ever started reading (after Sandman by Neil Gaiman). However, I do feel like the series had started to wind down a bit and this was a good place for it to tie-up.
Overall this is a nice conclusion to a graphic novel series that has been many many years in the running. I would definitely recommend the Fables series to anyone who enjoys graphic novels and loves either urban fantasy or fairy tale retellings. It’s a series I am sad to see end, but also happy to see end before it got too run down.
