This volume establishes Spencer's relationship with his family and others closest to him and as it unfolds we learn alongside him that not everything and everyone is black and white. As he tries to control his often overwhelming rage I was rooting for him to survive.
There's so much packed in and for a story that jumps between past, present and future it was easy to follow.
I would love to give this five stars but it was completely missing any explanation as to why women aren't allowed to use magic.
While it's just one layer of what promises to be a deep story it felt cheap. Fantasy is a genre steeped in misogeny and it was disappointing to have it slap-bang on the first page. However, there are some wonderful women characters who are clearly fighting (subtly) against this that I'm hoping it will be elaborated on in future volumes.
I'm also really looking forward to more lightning charged magic battles and tense family dynamics. Bring on volume 2!
