Yes, the origin of Empowered (nickname Emp) is the creator being commissioned to draw a super sexy superheroine all bondaged up with her costume ripped to shreds. Not an auspicious beginning, no? Okay, but! BUT! Emp is a real person. She has a rather silly problem with self-esteem, meaning that it's incredible low, but in a world of slinky super models and Sexy-scary Sista Spookeh (the Raven-esque sup who has declared Girl-War upon our Emp), a super sexy though hippy superhero in a skin tight costume doesn't really have a chance. You'd hope becoming a hero and winning a few battles would help her and it might have, but her supersuit is gossamer thin and ridiculously fragile. Emp can get shot and survive, but a rose-thorn induced scratch to her costume makes the thing useless, resulting in Emp getting tied up and laughed at. This pretty much kills any hope of Emp getting over her self-consciousness. It could become annoying if it'd just have been Emp. Thank goodness we got Thug-Boy, Ninjette and Demonwolf (destroyer of world, defiler of universes etc etc), to be Emp thus-absent support group. Strangely all Emp's friends were originally kind of sort of villians, and they have her back in battles, training and emotional and verbal mood lifting. Even the Demonwolf, who is just waiting to escape form the belt Emp imprisoned him in, has been known to yell Emp out of her selfpitying worst.
The art is stellar, being both sexual and occasionally very violent, without confusing the two. Yes there is danger, yes there are highly sexual situations. And yet never once did I get that "Oh crap Emp gonna get raped" feeling, and it's all because the author thankfully avoids any "creepiness" due to an unspoke rule about not crossing the line from oogling Sups and tying Emp up to straight up sexual assault. So no worries there.
I cannot recommend this book series more. The straight up meta is reserved to the title pages, the short story format allows the author to give you the perfect length of story, and yes you'll get sex and fighting and honest human responses to superhuman situations.
