Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—The Doctor returns for two new adventures in time and space in these graphic novels featuring the 10th and 11th incarnations of everybody's favorite time-traveling alien. In Revolutions of Terror, Gabriella Gonzalez dreams of a life outside the family business and a break from the yoke of her father's relentless work ethic. When strange things start happening around her neighborhood and an even stranger pinstripe-wearing man shows up at her family diner, Gabby soon finds herself running for her life and fighting to save the world. After Life introduces Alice, a young woman struggling to keep a roof over her head and her hopes alive. After a chance encounter with a bow-tied stranger, Alice finds herself hunting for a rainbow dog, facing down aliens, and traveling the galaxy in a familiar blue box. Readers new to Doctor Who will appreciate the stand-alone feel of these two titles; neither book requires significant knowledge of the series to be enjoyed. Different artists and authors give each volume a slightly unique look and feel, with illustrations ranging from caricature to realism. Both Alice and Gabby slip into the role of companion nicely, and the manic energy of the 10th and 11th Doctors are captured well by the artists, though David Tennant is depicted more effectively than Matt Smith. VERDICT For libraries that have a large Doctor Who following, these two volumes will be excellent and popular additions to the stacks.—Clair Segal, LREI, New York City

This book was full of adventure, a touch of mystery, humor, meeting new people, defeating hostile creatures and the power of imagination mixed with creativity. I highly recommend!

This is the first comic/graphic novel/whatever you want to call it I have ever purchased. As a Doctor Who fan who much preferred the RTD era I was hoping for something along those lines when I picked up this book. Nick Abadzis exceeds my hopes beyond my wildest dreams. This is very well written and feels true to the Tenth Doctor era of the show. The new companion is better developed than certain characters on the show in recent years. The artwork is beautiful. I cannot recommend this enough to fans of the Tenth Doctor.

I enjoyed this graphic novel better than the 11th Doctor graphic novel, The After Life, in terms of both the stories and the artwork.

First, the cover artwork by Alice X. Zhang is simply gorgeous! I hope to see some more of her artwork in future Doctor Who issues by Titan.

As for the two separate stories, I find Nick Abadzis to be an excellent writer. There are times I felt that a certain page was a bit too wordy but he does bring such depth to the story through his writing. There were a few scenes which I felt were clearly a rip-off from "Rose", such as the Doctor telling Gabby to forget him after their first encounter. I absolutely loved how the second story was told which was through Gabby's journal. Very original and unique approach in writing comic books! There were times that I've found Gabby's small handwriting hard on the eyes but I found the handwritten texts very refreshing, considering the art of handwriting is becoming a lost art in today's generation. Handwriting brings out so much of a person's personality.

Elena Casagrande, the artist of both stories, did a marvelous job drawing out the stories. She had the knack of making the story almost seamless through her artwork. I think she truly succeeded in capturing Tennant's likeness, something that Simon Fraser and Boo Cook have failed in with their Doctor, the Smith Doctor. Arianna Florean's coloring - such bold and vibrant colors. Her work really compliments Elena's work really well! More Elena and Arianna please!

Looking forward to the next volume!

I wasn't quite sure if I was going to like this series or not, but when I got this book I was super impressed. For one thing the price is fantastic (for a hardcover? Amazing). The artwork was high quality (I haven't been incredibly impressed by past Doctor Who artwork... it's up and down usually). The story grabs your attention and even though it features a completely new companion, she's very likeable and you quickly grow attached as though you're watching the show itself. All around, this book was a great fun read and I can't wait for Volume 2. :)

Allons-y, Dr. Who fans. If you are a fan of the 10th doctor, then you won't be disappointed by this book. The author does a wonderful job and capturing Tennant's essence. It truly feels as if you were watching an episode of the show as perform by David Tennat. The artist was a revelation to me, she is flipping amazing, the panels are great, the characters look beautiful. Seriously if you like Dr. Who this is one series you cannot miss.

I’m loving the new companion! These stories are original and well executed, I’m definitely going to be finding more of them to read!

I am not a Doctor Who fan. I had not seen the show. I thought about giving the series a go, but the magnitude of history and numerous seasons dating all the way back to the 60’s was too overwhelming. If I were to watch the series I would most likely start with the 2005 season.

That said, I decided to read the comic as a starting point to get an understanding of what the series is all about. It has all the elements of a Vertigo title from the 90’s, a branch of comic titles I enjoyed, like Sandman, Shade the Changing Man and Fables. However, I was not taken in by this comic. I think it was all the hype from friends and geek grandiosity that built up the greatness of this series that left me feeling a bit lack luster in the comic book experience.

Granted, it was a comic book based on the series and not like actually watching the series, so I should cut it some slack. And I did, hence the triple star rating. I think fans of the show would like this, fans of Vertigo titles could like this, and those who like sci-fi and fantasy could like this if they innocently stumbled upon it.

I would have liked it more had I not been primed by the Doctor Who hype over the years. I do recommend it. I may read another story arc to see if my opinion changes.

This book features adventures of the 10th Doctor set sometime after Series 4.

To start off with, let's talk about the art: Wow! Elena Casagrande nails the art. Her likeness of Tennant, of the TARDIS interior is perfect. She puts so much into each character. The art throughout this is incredibly complex and rich. I've rarely seen a comic look this good unless it was painted by Alex Ross.

The stories are fairly good. Gabby makes a great new companion. She's a likable and interesting character who you can easily relate to. The stories were fairly clever themed. I'd like the first one centering on New York's celebration of the Day of the Dead, and the second one on another planet involving a reclusive artist and her insane assistants. There were some decent concepts, with the second story revisiting the idea of block transfer mathematics from the Fourth and early Fifth Doctor era without seeming too wistful.

The biggest problem is that while Casagrande captures the physical appearance of the Tenth Doctor, Abadzis really struggles that Doctor's unique voice. There are a few parts of the book that are a bit verbose, and I should there are some elements in the second story parents might find problematic. Still, this is a gorgeous book and gives a wonderful new look at Titan's 10th Doctor Title.

As the tenth doctor was always my favourite, i was excited to see him brought to life in comic book form/ on the page. I am not normally a collector of graphic novels on their own but I have bought a few collector ones. I love how vibrant and colourful the pages are and the artists Nick Abadzis Elena Casagrande do an excellent job of drawing the doctor. I like Gabriella as a sort of companion in these stories, she's quite likeable and very easy to relate to.

The stories themselves in this collection are wonderful. They actually seem like plausible plots from the Who universe and not simply random stories featuring the doctor. Also, I love that this book is hardcover. So much better in terms of collecting and keeping it in good condition

In lingua inglese ovviamente.
