Diosamante, the beautiful, egotistical queen falls passionately in love with a king. To prove herself worthy, she begins a long journey in search of self-perfection.

PUBLICATION IN 1 VOLUME - COMPLETED WORK

The Kingdom of Arhas is clenched in the iron fist of Queen Diosamante. The pitiless ruler is known as much for her cruelty as for her incredible beauty, causing countless mighty warriors to throw themselves into fatal combat, with the hope of sharing a single night of love with the legendary Diosamante…only to be killed by her very hands at the time of the winter solstice.

One day, the glowing reputation of Urbal de Sarabba challenges the pride of the young queen, as this king is said to be wiser, more powerful, and loved by his people. Furious, the intrepid beauty goes in search of this man who dares cast a shadow over her. When she arrives at his palace, however, their meeting takes an unexpected turn when the two sovereigns fall madly in love.

About the Author

Alejandro Jodorowsky (also known as Alexandro Jodorowsky) is a Chilean film and theatre director, screenwriter, playwright, actor, comic book writer, author, poet, mime, musician, and spiritual guru. He is best known for his avant-garde, cult films, such as "El Topo," a midnight movie favorite.

Jean-Claude Gal was a French comic artist mostly known for his work in Metal Hurlant. He began his career as an art teacher near Paris before his short stories were published. Appearing in the very first issue of Metal Hurlant, Gal continued a partnership with editor/author/ co-founder of Humanoids, Jean-Pierre Dionnet, that included 13 years on the series “Armies”. He began working on “Diosamante”, written by Alexandro Jodorowsky until his death in 1994.

Like Gal’s other brilliant work in Armies, this art just begs for a high quality oversized edition. The detail and care of Gal’s art is just stunning and would benefit from oversized treatment. Combining this art with Jodorowsky’s storytelling still creates a special book.

Amazing artwork, great story, but sadly the second story arc is cut short by the artist's death. The rest of the 2nd arc is summarized at the end, unfortunately it doesn't really do it justice, but the first story arc more than makes up for it in my opinion. Fans of Jodorowsky won't be disappointed!

Jean-Claude Gal and Alejandro Jodorowsky are powerhouses of highly conceptual European comics. This was a particularly strong showing for Alejandro Jodorowsky's style of writing as it shows a transition between his "El Topo" and "Holy Mountain" spiritual allegories (with strong sexual elements) and pure Euro-comic fantasy. While no one can excuse Alejandro Jodorowsky of having particularly human characters, this fantasy and spiritual allegory really works, and the given that Jodorowsky does not have as much recourse to techno-babble, the dialogue is believable for the kind of allegory it is. Jean-Claude Gal's death, sadly, cuts the work short and the end of book two could not be completed so the arc was left somewhat unfinished. Gal's detail work though is stunting, and richly textured. You could see why this book took him a few years to complete given how much is in even panel of the work.

The artwork here is quite amazing and is actually the best illustrations of a graphic novel I have ever seen. You are immediately transported to another world, every detail is perfect and extraordinary.
The story is powerful and unusual and hats off to Jodorowsky for bringing this work to light!

Jean-Claude Gal is one of the best French graphic novel artists. This and "Armies" (also printed by Humanoids [in an oversize format that really shows off his detailed line work]) seem to be his only books translated to English. Check out the "look inside" preview for both books. He's in the same league as Moebius and Manara.. It's a shame that Gal wasn't able to do more books.

Jodorowsky's writing is top notch and is filled with his mystical wisdom.I think Jodorowsky's contribution to the field of graphic novels is greater than his contributions to film. I hope more people are able to see his story telling in his graphic novels.

As others have mentioned the book is short and the second half is unfininshed to the artist's premature demise. The sketches are fascinating to look at.

This book features incredibly detailed art, sadly Gal passed away before he could finish the whole arc, but I'm so glad this book got published. It took Gal 2 years to finish fourty pages of this book, and when you look at each panel, you can tell why. Its a must have piece of art, and its available at a very low price, so grab it while its still there.

Colorful , joyful , playful

This is a comment ONLY on the Kindle version. What portion I can see of the book looks like it's actually quite good. But it only displays part of the screen on my Kindle Fire, no matter the orientation or how I try to manipulate it. I'll be looking for a hard copy. On the Fire, it is unreadable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent art, awful story
Reviewed in India on March 13, 2024
For me Jean-Claude Gal has cemented himself as best artist, not just best comic book artist but best artist period. Unfortunately he passed away while working on this book, and there are only 2 works done by him which I know of. But unlike Armies (his other work) this was also colored by him. I am thankful that I was able to experience his art.
Now to the story, there are only few moments which I liked but overall it's awful and there is a final chapter which shows how it was supposed to end as Gal passed away, an awful end to the last. Just read it for the art as you won't see anything like this ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Jodorowsky classic

If you like the art from Jodorowsky you won't be let down with Diosamante. The story telling is like watching one of his movies taken to the extreme, I guess he could do wilder things in a graphic novel than with the limitations of live action film. It's a must for Jodorowsky fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars great art, story not so great
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 7, 2013
This is a visual treat but the story being too mythological and heroic put me off because, well, people simply don't behave like that and I think that even fantasy has to acknowledge this. All in all this album is worth having but just about, I'd say.
