About the author

Richard Sala grew up with a fascination for musty old museums, dusty old libraries, cluttered antique shops, narrow alleyways, hidden truths, double meanings, sinister secrets and spooky old houses. He has written and drawn a number of unusual graphic novels which often combine elements of classic mystery and horror stories and which have been known to cause readers to emit chuckles as well as gasps. Although most of his books are written with teens and older readers in mind, his book, CAT BURGLAR BLACK, can be enjoyed by younger readers as well. He has also collaborated with Lemony Snicket and Art Spiegelman, and his illustrations and artwork have won awards and been published all over the world.

For those that like Sala's art, this does not disappoint. If you have never seen it before, it is very reminiscent of old German pop-art seen in many of their 1920's silent films ( Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (4K Restored) [Blu-ray ], Nosferatu: Kino Classics 2-Disc Deluxe Remastered Edition [Blu-ray ]). The story though for some reason falls a little short, maybe because it lacks both of his usual trademarks: one main, deranged evil character, a female protagonist, or both. Here the main character is a very normal average joe, and there really is no one true "bad-guy", more like the collected town he visits as a whole. Still, Sala was no doubt bored doing the same thing over and over, and I could see where some other Sala fans would find this refreshing.
For me, the story was more like 3 1/2 stars, but I have rounded up to 4 because of the art. You can get this used fairly cheap, so I would still pick it up.
Are those people really witches and goblins or just innocent merchants and townsfolk?
Here are the deep, dark woods of fairy tales, peopled by an evil stepmother, a kind-hearted woodsman and a big, bad wolf.
This was a darkly enchanting read, filled with luscious but disturbing imagery. When I finished the book, I had that weird feeling you get after waking from a strange, half-remembered dream.
Its not always spelled out for the reader, but that's a good thing

A nameless traveler voyages to this secluded town surrounded by dark forest in search of Delphine, the woman whom he fell in love with who never returned home. While in search he must face the sinister inhabitants of this town along with all the evil in it.
The book is a really great read weather you are familiar with the original story or not. Sala did a great job of adapting it and making it his own and really brought out the mystery and horror making it chilling and unforgettable.
