Born in Indianapolis, he went to Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. He studied Psychology because people fascinated him, but in getting his B.A. he learned that psychology didn't describe real people, so he became a writer.

Living the Young Creator's life in New York, he got to be drinking buddies with an editorial assistant at Marvel Comics. One night the e.a. called to say he was going on vacation for six weeks; would Steve like to fill in for him on staff? Steve would, and once in the door at what was then a very small operation, he got a shot at writing a comic. It was a failing series called Captain America -- but six months later it had become Marvel's leading seller, and Steve had all the work he could handle. He became Marvel's lead writer, adding The Hulk, The Avengers, Thor, Dr. Strange, and half a dozen other series. Then he was hired away by DC Comics to be their lead writer and revamp their core characters (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern). He did, but also wrote a solo Batman series that readers dubbed the "definitive" version and broke the long-standing barrier between comics readers and the mass market. All comics films since Batman in 1989 stem from that.

After Batman he traveled around Europe for a year and wrote his first novel, The Point Man. Since then he's designed video games for Atari, Activision, Electronic Arts, and others. He's written animation for Street Fighter and G.I. Joe. He's written mid-grade books for Avon, including the DNAgers series, and Countdown to Flight, a biography of the Wright brothers selected by NASA as the basis for their school programs on the invention of the aeroplane. And he's written more comics, like Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer, which led to the San Diego Comic-Con calling him "comics' most successful writer, having had more hits with more characters at more companies than anyone else in comics history." He created The Night Man, which became a live-action television series.

Most recently, The Point Man has engendered a series of novels from Tor, beginning with The Long Man.

Roy Thomas and the first issues of this saga are the best version of the group. When Steve Gerber took over the writing chores it took an off beat turn that had lots of mystical characters that Dr. Strange was better off battling on his own. However the original lineup with Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer, Sub-Mariner,Hulk was the best. After that group was split, The Defenders became something else other than the path Roy established. You'll enjoy the early stories that have that 70's vibe with social commentary. Marvel could not do stories like this today, that reflect the disenfranchised segment of society. The Defenders were anti-establishment and helped ordinary people that could not fight the super powered beings from other dimensions. These books had a point of view that you would never see in today's Marvel corporate comics, as Jim Starlin called them. It's important that these stories are collected. They are a time capsule of issues covered in 1970's comics. Poverty, human rights, protesters against the establishment were all covered in those early issues. It just wasn't just a journey into the world of the fantastic. Lots of social issues were integrated into the stories. It's a nostalgic trip to a time we'll never see again. Socially relevant super hero comics that are not afraid to comment about current issues!

I finally get to read the first tales of the Defenders and - after a rocky start- they soar! What a fun collection of unlikely allies. It was interesting to see its tentative start in the Sub-Mariner's book and the way that Dr. Strange stepped into the leadership role.

I very much enjoyed revisiting this series of comics that I’d enjoyed as a kid (‘though there had been gaps). I realize that, over the intervening decades, I’ve become a more demanding reader, but I still enjoy these tales, and still greatly appreciate the amazing art (especially the art of Sal Buscema)!

Before Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Lukd Cage....meet the originals. You will not be displeased ...on to volume 2!!

The art is pretty nice. The preface and afterwords are interesting. The shallow hero characters are dull and egotistical. Towards the end Valkyrie and Namorita are introduced which adds a bit of depth to the hero ranks. The stories are mostly predictable and cookie cutter especially ones involving demonic foes. I found it the relationship of the main characters and their interactions to be a bit nonsensical but I'm glad I read it just the same.

A great way to get to read some classic comics without spending a lot of money. The Defenders had an ever-changing line-up, although Dr. Strange and the Hulk were mainstays, and several other characters stayed on longer than some. There are some great stories here.

I will be ordering volume 2.

Interesting characters, and a glimpse of an earlier era. While not really that long ago, comics certainly were different. The stories are well written.

It is fun to read these books that I collected when I was a teenager. These books provide an escape from the daily grind.
