Deadpool by Posehn & Duggan Vol. 4 (Deadpool (2012-2015)) Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

Collects Deadpool (2012) #35-44 and #250.

It’s the end of the road for the Merc with a Mouth! First, our red-clad hero is stalked by a classic Spider-Slayer! Wait, this isn’t a Spider-Man book. Deadpool had better find out what’s going on before it mashes him into spider-paste! Then, inverted by the events of AXIS, Deadpool puts down the guns — and goes Zen! So how can he possibly save his friends from an attack by the also-inverted X-Men?! In the aftermath, Deadpool takes a relaxing vacation to the Middle East, clashes with Omega Red, journeys into the Tomb of Scariness with Shiklah and battles the revenge-crazed ULTIMATUM organization! Oh, and he dies at the end. Is that a spoiler? Plus: a slew of bonus stories, including one final flashback feast in which Deadpool gets his hands on…the Infinity Gauntlet?!

I spent the entire Duggan/Posehn run feeling like I was waiting for a big climactic moment in which all the buildup would finally come together into something coherent and satisfying. Instead the story waves back and forth between pop-culture meme humor and melodramatic scenes of Deadpool breaking down and crying.

The new characters introduced in these stories come across as very one-dimensional, and are more often than not very painful to read. The SHIELD agents in particular feel more like the Marvel version of JarJar Binks than the "reliable best friends" that they're protrayed as. There's also a large portion of the story which is contained solely within a separate collection and introduces what becomes an (evidently) very big character in the new Deadpool run. I won't spoil it, but if you're reading this run solely by buying these books, then prepare to be completely out of the loop between volumes 2 & 3.

On top of that, these two have now hinted that the legendary run by Joe Kelly (which arguably made Deadpool into the big character he is today) may not even be canon anymore. Stating that the plotlines provided by T-Ray may have been hallucinations and/or false memories planted into Deadpool by yet another mysterious evil scientist (because that plot device hasn't been explored to death already). We also don't get the joy of seeing the story unravel and be revealed before us in this run, instead "inventory issues" are used which pose as fake stories from old 70s/80s classic Marvel comics which they write Deadpool into. These issues are also canon to Deadpool, yet not necessarily to the Marvel universe, which makes them more of a roadblock in the story rather than an assistant to them. The art is great and matches the comics from the time, but the stories feel incredibly forced and even lead up to Deadpool having a daughter... So we then deal with this "turmoil" of Deadpool being a cold-blooded mercenary killer and yet having to deal with wanting to be father of the year. Think of the Ant Man story with Scott Lang and the troubled relationship with his daughter, only this one isn't enjoyable. I found myself actually aggravated when the story would suddenly slam on the brakes and switch gears into these flashback issues, ultimately skipping them and only reading the last couple pages so that I could have context as to what would happen in the current-day story.

Overall there are just a lot of disconnected ideas that SEEM good in theory, but they never really get fleshed out or bring anything to the story other than getting the reader to say "Well, that happened". The Zenpool segment felt like something that should have been a major change in the story, and directed the character towards the development and message they were so desperately trying to cram down our throats with each issue. Instead, Zenpool and Deadpool's journey towards accepting his past and adapting to be at peace with himself gets ditched for yet another melodramatic story involving his shoe-horned daughter.

Finally as we end the big fight in this series, we get back to the main cast of characters all together before the story abruptly ends as it leads into Secret Wars. This isn't necessarily the fault of the writers for this series, but more of a roadblock provided by one of the biggest Marvel Events in their comics' history. So we balance melodrama, meme-humor, retconning, and a completely flat-lined finale all into one boring and forgetful collection.
