Vampire Barnabas Collins is back for seven more adventures from Gold Key's original 1970's run of the DARK SHADOWS comic book. This volume features Issues #15-21, which were released on a bi-monthly basis between August 1972 and August 1973. It's interesting to note that the show itself had been off the air for over a year when these comics were published, so that speaks well of their popularity and of the interest in the exploits of the Collins Family that endured with fans even after the show's passing. You don't have to be a fan of the tv-show, however, to enjoy these stories. Enough character background is provided in each issue so that anyone can pick one up, understand the premise, and enjoy the entertainment. The storyline for each issue is self-contained and, when compared to the latest comic reincarnation of DS, really pack in a lot of adventure in 20 or so pages.

Hermes Press has again done a masterful job in reproducing the covers and the comic artwork. The colors are excellent and the text is crisp and clean. Having many of the original issues myself, I can guarantee that these comics have never looked better. This volume is the thinnest of those released so far with 192 pages, but does offer another fine introduction by Dr. Jeff Thompson who provides a brief history on each issue. There's a nice publicity still of actor Jonathan Frid as Barnabas prior to the introduction, and only two publicity stills at the end of the book: one of Jonathan as Barnabas with actress Donna Wandrey as Roxanne Drew; the other of actor David Selby as Quentin Collins. Previous volumes featured more extensive photos. No matter. The comics themselves, after all, are intended to be the main attraction and are the reason we're buying the book.

In this volume Barnabas confronts his nemesis the witch Angelique who uses demon children to lure him into the Netherworld, battles an Egyptian prince of the dark arts, finds a potential bride in a parallel world, matches wits with New York gangsters, gets kidnapped by ghost pirates, discovers his lycanthropic cousin Quentin has become a vampire, and becomes involved with an evil traveling circus. Supporting characters include staples from the tv-show such as Dr. Julia Hoffman, Prof. T. Elliot Stokes, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard and her brother Roger Collins.

So, longtime fan or new one to the DS mythos, take a stroll up to Widow's Hill and enter the great house of Collinwood. There you will meet 175-year old vampire Barnabas Collins who would never do anything to hurt his own flesh and blood. Fortunately for him there is never a stranger too far away.

This is an excellent graphic novel to read. The stories could be seen as additional episodes of the TV show "Dark Shadows".

This issue of the Dark Shadows comic was okay. It was a good story until the writers decided to give Barnabas Collins the ability to time travel whenever he wants to. Barnabas is not a super hero. He's a vampire, a member of the Undead.

He does not have the ability to time travel at will just because he thinks it and because he's a vampire. Even in the TV show, when Barnabas time travels, it's either due to a seance going wrong or because he stumbled upon a winding staircase that has the ability to travel through time. He does not time travel just because he thinks it and because it's one of "his abilities". Other than this major hiccup, the story is good and the artwork is fantastic once again.

I especially loved the artwork in the flashback scene 👍.
