With this current series, you have to open your mind to the possibility that evil may reign the universe. Look out for the next few issues. Unputdownable.

Dark Nights: Death Metal: Robin King

The prologue introduces the Robin King. Three pages in and I’m already scared for the heroes. There’s a double-page spread on the contents of his utility belt, including but not limited to Lobo’s Hook, both Holy and Unholy Water, and bottled imp (Mister Mxyzptlk). Impressed? I was.

The Robin King is a young, evil version of Bruce Wayne. He goes on a killing spree on his Earth. Jim Gordon, Firestorm, Hans Von Hammer, the Balloon Buster (a real character I swear), the Hawks, and Atom Strange don’t last till the final page.

Enter the Batman Who Laughs. He invites the Robin King to play in a new playground where he can use his skills to kill new heroes.

The trio of Blue Beetle, Animal Man, and Red Tornado are his first challenges. Bet on the King.

Drawbacks – lots of jumping around between the history of the Robin King and the now of Death Metal that only serves as a distraction. The art is a little cartoony for my taste especially given the body count.

The backup feature stars the Signal against Quietus, another evil incarnation of Batman. Quietus has an involved origin but the character has a great design. First look reminded me of a match up of Batman and Chemo. Chemo has no part in Quietus’ origin.
