Stan Lee is a man who needs no introduction. Nevertheless: Having begun his career with wartime Timely Comics and staying the course throughout the Atlas era, Stan the Man made comic-book history with Fantastic Four #1, harbinger of a bold new perspective in story writing that endures to this day. With some of the industry’s greatest artists, he introduced hero after hero in Incredible Hulk, Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men and more — forming a shared universe for rival publishers to measure themselves against. After an almost literal lifetime of writing and editing, Lee entered new entertainment fields and earned Marvel one opportunity after another. He remains one of Marvel’s best-known public representatives.

-----------------

Great deal when you consider how much it cost per issue. Exceptional quality and color. Looks great on the bookshelf. Get the real story and not the new politically correct ones shown on Netflix.

Marvel has always had strong characters and great story arcs.

The only reason. I had to go with 4 stars instead of 5 was the blatant misogyny in the writing. It was enough to make me cringe and then laugh. It was the times I know. Overall I love the art and the classic, if sometimes cheesy, stories.

Marvel Masterworks are a great way to get Silver Age stories without paying the high prices for the original 1960's issues. I have gotten the "Essentials" books but those reprints are just black and white while the Masterworks are in color. I wanted the Daredevil volume one edition to have the first ten issues. I actually have issues 12 through 27 of the original comics so this helped fill in the gap. There is nothing like having the actual comics (with the ads and the letter pages) but Marvel Masterworks is an economical way of getting the stories (and pin-ups, etc.). As for the Daredevil sotories in this first volume, the stories are a little "stiff" and the artwork is not my favorite (When John Romita took over with Issue # 12, I thought the series improved greatly) but it is good background and you can see how the character developed.

It took me decades to finally read the early pages of Daredevil. It might felt ancient as the plot, the villains, storytelling, etc were indeed the style of the 60s. Sometimes the writers didn't bother to gave further explanation. for example: why Daredevil changed his costume from yellow-red into all red?

Some of Stan Lee's work has gotten dated with age and while this collection of comics isn't short on bubbly headed women and blind references. Once you get past that, there are some fine stories here.

This volume collects the first eleven issues of Daredevil. His origin is told. His original costume of yellow and later his more famous red one are both revealed. Supporting characters like Foggy Nelson and Karen Page are introduced. Some great battles against foes like Electro and Namor are in these early issues. I am not a huge fan of Daredevil, but I was certainly entertained by these issues, written by the great Stan Lee. Overall, I was very satisfied with this and I would recommend it to any comic book fan.
