First of my big bone to pick with this collection. I hate the paper. All the previous Epic Collections I own feature the heavier matte paper. This one features the slick, shiny ultra thin glossy paper which Marvel frequently uses in it's regular trades. This paper is especially bad in a volume of this size being over 475 pages. One little krinkle or pucker seems to amplify on all the subsequent pages leaving very wrinkly pages that don't lay flat. We also have major gutter loss with lots of the panels being hard to read.
We get a two page contents page with page numbers , but yet not a single page is numbered. Granted with these modern comics you get a lot of pages with full bleed art which goes to page border. But if they would have numbered the rest of the pages I would be very satisfied.
The coloring is by Christie Scheele and is from that era when they first started computerized coloring and very much not to my liking. Take a good look at the coloring for that very first issue DD #365 . It is horrible with lots of yellow and brown skin tones. Thankfully it improves as the book goes along and I no longer found it to be a big distraction.
When I first saw this solicited I saw the names Cary Nord and Gene Colan attached and assumed it was the Karl Kessel run, one I dearly love.
But when I opened it I saw that it starts right after Kessel left the book. It is also the final issues prior to Kevin Smith / Joe Quesada reboot. Another excellent run.
Joe Kelly has never been a favorite of mine but I vowed to give the book a chance. And I confess with the exception of the Deadpool Annual I rather enjoyed his stories.
Daredevil #365 picks up where Karl Kessel left it with Cary Nord on pencils and Mr. Fear as the main villain for the rest of Kelly's run. The Molten Man is also in this issue.
Next we get Daredevil #-1. This was part of Marvel's Flashback month with every title taking a break in it's regular numbering to do an untold tale of the past. This story was my favorite of the entire collection and not just because of the Gene Colan art. Matt Murdoch and his dad get Matt settled for his first day of college.
DD #365 and DD #366 form a good two parter set in the prison . The Gladiator makes an appearance.
Next we get the Daredevil/ Deadpool Annual 97 which was by far my least favorite of this volume. Yes , I am not a Deadpool fan but I found Joe Kelly's writing here to be as funny as a Root Cannel. It doesn't help that I had previous to this volume tried to read the new Epic Collection sized Typhoid Mary volume and gave up about 50 pages in. The character, the writing and the art was all just too dark for my taste. So when I saw Typhoid Mary and Deadpool together I was not a happy camper. Also it is a 50 page story.
Next we get The Widow's Kiss the three part story from Daredevil #368 to #370. It features the Soviet Super Soliders, Omega Red and of course the Black Widow. Gene Colan did the first and the third part with Ariel Olivetti doing the middle one. Olivetti an artist from Argentina would become the regular penciler on the book after this.
Daredevil #371 Fallout is an excellent epilogue which mostly just deals with all the cast relationships.
DD #372 to #374 deals with a murder case and Karen Page's new job. Also Ghost Rider makes an appearance.
In Daredevil #375 we get Karen Page standing trial for Murder. This double size issue suffers from having six separate art teams on it none with similar styles. Kelly tries to wrap up all his plot lines with only partial success.
Scott Lobdell does a four part story in Daredevil #376 to #379 about Daredevil going under deep cover as a non-blind French man. So deep that he doesn't even know it. Cully Hamner draws part one and four . While Tom Morgan does two and three. I remember liking this story a lot when it came out. But rereading it I found several plot holes and resented how they dropped most of the cast and the plots from Kelly's run.
We wrap on a low note with Daredevil #380, a garbled and over written story from DG Chichester. And when I saw Matt back in his armoured costume I wanted to throw up." Call me Deathdevil". Yeck !!! The only thing I liked on this story was the great art by the underrated Lee Weeks.
For extras we get two interviews one each with Gene Colan and Joe Kelly from Marvel Vision (Marvel's In House Fanzine) and original art reproductions and one not used cover.
I rate the production of the book a 2 star. Marvel please no more of this paper. But for over all enjoyment of the stories a 4 star rating.

Scott Lobdell and Tom Morgan take over with the 4 part 'Flying Blind' story and its not bad at all. There's interviews with Gene Colan and Joe Kelly from Marvel Vision included as well as some original art pages. Another good one.
