Constantine: The Hellblazer (2015-2016) Vol. 1: Going Down Kindle & comiXology

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 90 ratings

Jump into the opening chapter of this wickedly funny and racy modern reintroduction of John Constantine!

The dead can't die again—even within the supernatural circles that surround John Constantine, some things are impossible. But when the ghosts that haunt the occult detective start being murdered, it becomes clear the rules have changed. Far worse than ordinary death, this second death means oblivion—no afterlife, no way back. To stop it, Constantine must explore the barriers between the mundane and the extraordinary: the thin places.

The investigation takes the Hellblazer from New York City back home to London, where he joins up with an old rival, now an exorcist in Her Majesty's Secret Service. Their dark, tangled history together is filled with music and magic, failed friendships and disastrous romance.

But even if Constantine somehow survives the supernatural serial killer, the price involved could leave whatever's left of his soul beaten and broken.

CONSTANTINE: THE HELLBLAZER: GOING DOWN collects the first six issues of the groundbreaking series by celebrated writers Ming Doyle (THE KITCHEN) and James Tynion IV (BATMAN ETERNAL) and acclaimed artists Riley Rossmo (Proof) and Vanessa Del Rey (Hit).

I've rarely read a book about a character more unlikable than John Constantine. There's very little to like about him but this book makes you want to read on purely because it is so well written. The art is great too, nothing is difficult to keep track of, everything just pops. I hate him, I want to read more.

Yeah the art at first, makes art types wanna tear their eads' off!

Just read this Edition, of Johnney' s continuing tales of two cities, & the story will help you thru, till you reach a part that show cases more then just plot, & circumstance.
John comes across, sorry at tymes for his selfish past actions.
An interesting note to anyone who knows his true character, to only be seen as shyster Magi without feelings.
He becomes humble, as he attempts, tho badly of course, to convince those he needs help from, & his intentions are of the noble kind?
It's John bloody Constantine, nuff said luv.
Press forward thru the comic, & a potential love interest enters the frame, bi frame, bi frame.

A familiar face haunts the bloke, Magician, for once, not a ghosty, but after everything, he goes thru, John's hesitations
are understandable.
He feels a need to let this person, into his space, no matter what has transpired before, after everything, after all
John is still human too, his feelings are not what are important tho, & he is well aware of his curse, as anyone who loves the Hell blazer, knows we expect it all to go wrong, well?
Tah, pet.
Have a beer, & Curry, & a very hot Shag eh?
Wink, wink, sai no more Johnny, luv. Sai no more.
Maybe part two?.. ;+

Being a fan of both Constanine's stint in the Vertigo Crime series and the writing of the original Helblazer series I find that this is a brilliant mix of the caliber of writing that Ming Doyle brought us years ago with a fresh and evocative look brought to us for the most part by Riley Rossmo.

I plan on following this one all the through the volumes and am very excited for each new issue.

A couple of other comic "aficionados" I'm friends one, one with their own webcomic series and store, share my sentiment, for what that's worth as well. A worthy predecessor to the original series, regardless of what any hipster or snob may say with disdain as they sigh and roll their eyes because you're considering purchasing anything other than the original (My personal experience locally funny enough).

Get issue one and give it a shot!

At the end of the 52, Ming Doyle was tasked to adding the edge back into Constantine which the prior new 52 run had lost in attempt to broaden the appeal of the comic. Doyle brings blood and indie music references, but it is not as nuanced or developed as any writer's run on the Vertigo comic. Many of the plotlines feel some of obvious. Decent but frustrating if you have any experience with the original.

Fantastic! Ming Doyle gets Constantine like no one else. And props for being the first run to really explore John's bisexuality. The story here is creative and clever, and characterization is spot on. I love the artwork.

This is Constantine's new solo book and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the story. It has a nice mix of what Constantine's up to in the present day and flashbacks that explain some of what has shaped the character. Most of this book is really about John's relationships. He seems to be pretty lonely in a lot of respects; like he uses snark to hide behind. He's sort of a jerk. He chain smokes. He has promiscuous sex with otherworldly entities.

In the past we find out that John's first love was a girl he knew named Veronica Delacroix; and we get to see how that ended. In the present day he meets a guy named Oliver who owns a restaurant. It's pretty clear that John is interested in hooking up with Oliver. I was not previously aware that John Constantine was a bisexual character. Apparently this was revealed in an older storyline that I'd never heard about until I looked it up after reading this. It made me want to pick up some older trades and find out more about the character. It will be interesting to see how it continues in the next volume, even though there's a solid conclusion for the supernatural story that these events unfold around.

The whole book has great flow. I wasn't crazy about the art but it's ok. I liked the look of John back in his rock star days the best.

I received an advance reader's copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for feedback and a review.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor artwork, even poorer stories.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 30, 2023
Firstly, the artwork is poor with Constantine never having looked less like himself. Secondly, the writer has no understanding of Constantine's character so just replaces personality with cliches.
It's all really terrible.
