4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

When Hitler's armies invaded Russia in 1941, it seemed like a great adventure for many a German soldier and young Hans Moller was no exception. And, slowly but surely, Hans and his mates found themselves fighting not for glory, but for their very lives!

As an American, I’d never heard of Commando Comics until I accidentally ran across them recently. Apparently the series has been published continually since 1961 and has 5,710 issues! This is the second one I’ve read. I’m impressed with the series. False Glory follows a young German from 1937 until more or less the end of the war. It’s sort of a coming of age story showing the boys initial excitement about war and the Fuhrer to his disillusionment through combat. The end is unexpected as it covers his experiences as a prisoner of war in Canada. The two Commando issues I’ve read have gone out of their way to present historically accurate artwork. I really appreciate this. I also really liked this particular story. It shows how common people are affected by propaganda and cults of personality. And how difficult it is to escape from these ideologies, even when they realizes it’s wrong.

A predictable, formulaic story line. Probably one of the worst stories I've read.
