Coda Vol. 1 Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 291 ratings

In the aftermath of an apocalypse which wiped out nearly all magic from a once-wondrous fantasy world, an antisocial former bard named Hum seeks a way to save the soul of his wife with nothing but a foul-tempered mutant unicorn and his wits to protect him. But in the process, he is unwillingly drawn into a brutal power struggle which will decide forever who rules the weird wasteland... Written by Eisner Award-nominated author Simon Spurrier (The Spire, Godshaper) and lavishly illustrated by artist Matías Bergara (Supergirl, Cannibal), Coda is a relentless kaleidoscope of visual wonders, exploring high fantasy and the post-apocalypse through the lens of a curmudgeonly loner in search of his lost love.

Simon "Si" Spurrier writes novels and comics.

His work in the latter field stretches from award winning creator-owned books such as 'The Spire', 'Coda' and 'Angelic' to projects in the U.S. mainstream like 'Hellblazer', 'The Dreaming' and 'X-Men'. He and his works have been nominated for Eisner Awards multiple times.

His prose works range from the beatnik neurosis-noir of 'Contract' ("A tour de force" - The Times) to the occult whodunnit 'A Serpent Uncoiled' ("Gargantuan literary flourishes" - The Truth About Books). His experimental e-novella 'Unusual Concentrations' was shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Awards.

He lives in Margate, UK.

Maybe not for you, if you haven’t consumed enough fantasy to find the straightforward stuff tiresome. But amid all the winking at overused tropes like a nerdy insider, there’s a sincere desire to stare truly at the world and take it for what it is. Plus, the characters are so alive they pop from the page and the art has all the kinetic charge of Bill Watterson’s zanier imaginary antics. Grog for the geek soul.

Coda was beautifully drawn and exciting from start-to-finish. And there's a Pentacorn.

This book has a lot of character and takes familiar fantasy tropes to a different, stranger place, than what most are used too. Magic users are dumb nerds.

An amazing comic! Excellent writing and world building are complimented by a beautifully unique art style. It has redefined what I expect from a comic set in the fantasy genre. (The book arrived promptly and in good condition. The binding and paper quality are in line with standard trade backs.)

This is now one of my absolutely favorite new titles. Let's start with the art. It's so unique and colorful and epic. It conveys so much character and emotion. I love what they do with the dialog - variation in size, color, and style convey a lot of nuance to the conversation. And the story? It's packed with unique, colorful characters full of personality, great dialogue, and a story I didn't want to put down. I never know where it's going to go next, and I find that refreshing. The whole world of Coda is something new. Lastly, I so love the "horse". Excellent all around!

Hidden narratives told through emotive graphics. Not your simple line drawings with a splash of color, each panel is a full story interwoven with color. Onto vol 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars La mejor historia de fantasía indie

Do you like Lord of the Rings? How about Mad Max? This smashes the elements of both together!

The art is "cleanly chaotic", lots of wild details and energetic to a fault! Very vibrant and colourful, showing a crazy world of broken fantasy, but altogether easily readable.

It pulls plot elements of epic fantasy stories and post-apocalypse fiction and creates a very interesting and endearing tale.

Well worth the read!
