Chris Claremont is pretty much a Marvel Comics legend. He helped make the X-Men what they are today, and created some of their most enduring characters and stories including the well-known Dark Phoenix Saga. Not sure what anniversary this is but I don't think it matters. I must admit that given his reputation I really haven't read all that much by him. I'm not sure if that makes a difference but I found this comic very confusing. The book revolves around New Mutants member Dani Moonstar as she faces a test of Valkyries. That's all that will make sense for most of the issue and you might like myself find yourself wondering if this is a time travel story or a dimension hopping story or something else entirely. There's little prompt as to what the case is before the action starts. The writing itself is kind of a garbled mess, trying to sound empowering and important but failing to be and to even call it a cohesive narrative would be a stretch. At the very least, Claremont does throw in a number of neat references to his previous body of work. He is joined on this issue by four different artists who I believe he has worked with in the past and I have to say that about half of their work, on this particular comic anyway, I do not like the look of. I've mostly enjoyed any Claremont comics I've taken the time to read and maybe I'm not quite qualified to say this but, this ain't good. It's a real disappointment but maybe that's just me.
