Mark Waid, a New York Times bestselling author, has written for a wider variety of well-known pop-culture characters and franchises than any other American author, from Superman to Star Wars to the Justice League to Archie to Spider-Man and many, many others. His award-winning work with artist Alex Ross, KINGDOM COME, is one of the best-selling graphic novels of all time. (Secretly, however, he prefers SUPERMAN: BIRTHRIGHT and his IRREDEEMABLE collections as his favorite works he's produced.)

Additionally, Waid is a leader in the digital comics medium. His publishing imprint, Thrillbent.com, hosts an enormous collection of multimedia stories in all genres.

With over thirty years of experience in his field, Waid happily mentors young writers and maintains a blog at www.markwaid.com that is full of advice for beginning writers and experienced authors both.

This, just takes me back to when he rose just wanted to do the good thing, and just the good thing. I like when Marvel actually takes their time to strengthen the younger Legacy characters and let them actually shine instead of just being carbon copies of their predecessors. I got to say they've been doing that with this book and I like it.

So much fun

This continues the fun team dynamic from the first volume and I love to see a book that's so ardently and unapologetically pro-social-justice. The only thing I didn't care for so much in this volume is the abrupt shift into a storyline where Hydra has taken over the country and destroyed Las Vegas, followed by just as abrupt a shift right out of it, without tying up anything. It felt like an unresolved slice of a story that was mostly taking place elsewhere (which of course is what it was.) It wasn't that it was a bad story, or badly done, but it's jarring to end a chapter with "Ms. Marvel--in the hands of the enemy!" and open the next on "Ms. Marvel--at karaoke night!"

Not my favorite Marvel series. I like the concept of this team but I think it could be executed better.

Great read! Thus far I love the new Champions series. The book doesn’t necessarily flow the best since half way through they are dealing with current marvel affairs (spoilers ahead) ie. Captain America head of Hydra has taken over and closed off the planet, interned the inhumans, and given The White Queen and her followers San Francisco for a mutant safe-haven that’s not so safe (not that they explain that) so there’s a lot of parts of the book where it’s not really the Champions it’s just Viv-Vision for a bit then it’s just Viv, Amadeus, & Miles.

Marvels young person superteam of Ms. Marvel, Hulk, Viv Vision, Cyclops, Morales Spiderman and Nova is back. Volume 2 of Champions can be divided into two sections. The first being issues that were released before and after the Secret Empire crossover, and the second during. I'd like to talk about both separately.

The Secret Empire crossover were, surprisingly, not bad. Featuring the few members of the team not stuck in other event issues trying to rescue an inhuman camp and searching for survivors, the issues managed to hit just the right emotional tone. That, and having the stakes be so high kept Waid from writing the usual idiotic 'teen-speak' that dragged the first series down.

The non Secret Empire issues though? Those are embarrassingly bad idiot plots that are unworthy of an acclaimed writer like Waid. The first arc has the Champions fight the Freelancers, a group of private contractors who do bad things for money. Seriously, there is nothing to these characters other being as awful as physically possible. The worst part is they try to frame the Champions for there crimes, and it takes an entire issue for one member of the champions to come up with the brilliant idea of going on Youtube and denying it. Because everyone in this book is an idiot, apparently. The one issue after isn't much better, featuring Cyclops getting his mind messed with by the villain of the month, and none of the other champions thinking to restrain him in any way. I can't believe the guy who wrote Superman birthright wrote this.

This collection suffers a little bit because of the jumping around due to crossovers, but it is still entertaining me

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first volume

I was quite disappointed with this volume. It does not keep the same level as the first volume and it's mostly composed of one-issue stories and continuity problems. One issue finishes with Viv grounded, what appears to be a big issue, to have the next issue with no reference to this, as if nothing had happened. Also, some characters are introduced, but with no real consequence to the main story of the group.
