About the author
Mark Waid, a New York Times bestselling author, has written for a wider variety of well-known pop-culture characters and franchises than any other American author, from Superman to Star Wars to the Justice League to Archie to Spider-Man and many, many others. His award-winning work with artist Alex Ross, KINGDOM COME, is one of the best-selling graphic novels of all time. (Secretly, however, he prefers SUPERMAN: BIRTHRIGHT and his IRREDEEMABLE collections as his favorite works he's produced.)
Additionally, Waid is a leader in the digital comics medium. His publishing imprint, Thrillbent.com, hosts an enormous collection of multimedia stories in all genres.
With over thirty years of experience in his field, Waid happily mentors young writers and maintains a blog at www.markwaid.com that is full of advice for beginning writers and experienced authors both.

The Secret Empire crossover were, surprisingly, not bad. Featuring the few members of the team not stuck in other event issues trying to rescue an inhuman camp and searching for survivors, the issues managed to hit just the right emotional tone. That, and having the stakes be so high kept Waid from writing the usual idiotic 'teen-speak' that dragged the first series down.
The non Secret Empire issues though? Those are embarrassingly bad idiot plots that are unworthy of an acclaimed writer like Waid. The first arc has the Champions fight the Freelancers, a group of private contractors who do bad things for money. Seriously, there is nothing to these characters other being as awful as physically possible. The worst part is they try to frame the Champions for there crimes, and it takes an entire issue for one member of the champions to come up with the brilliant idea of going on Youtube and denying it. Because everyone in this book is an idiot, apparently. The one issue after isn't much better, featuring Cyclops getting his mind messed with by the villain of the month, and none of the other champions thinking to restrain him in any way. I can't believe the guy who wrote Superman birthright wrote this.
