By Night Vol. 1 Kindle & comiXology

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

Home to high school best friends Jane Langstaff and Heather Meadows, Spectrum is a boomtown that’s long since stopped booming, with nothing to show for its former glory but the abandoned Charleswood Estate, its dwindling sprocket millions, and the story of the disappeared industrialist who founded the place… But deep within Charleswood, unbeknownst to anyone, there is a device called the Eidolon, which can open up a doorway to an otherworldly dimension. And Heather and Jane are about to go knocking. Eisner Award nominee John Allison (Giant Days, Scary Go Round), and artist Christine Larsen (Adventure Time) invite you beyond the Eidolon, to a world of bizarre creatures and fantastical, hilarious adventure.

I haven't heard of this before checking it out of the library, and now I want to read the whole series.
This is a fun comedic fantasy.
Something is hidden at the grand estate of Chet Charles, a mysterious millionaire who disappeared many years ago.
Now, two friends who haven't really been friends since high school are going to explore the estate before some darn punk teens can get in there and mess it up with their songs about ferrets.
I really liked the very goofy humor in this book, it doesn't take itself very seriously and that helps balance what might otherwise be a dark tone to the story.

This is a structurally mid-grade creepy portal fantasy adventure story, whose MG tone oddly jangles with the young twentysomething protagonists heading into a dive bar in the first issue. This could have easily had more layers or deeper characterization without over-complicating the story, and I was hoping for more than what’s here.
