A tale of eldritch horror set in Kirkuk, Iraq during the American occupation. Well-defined, compelling characters define this police procedural turned battle against an ancient god. It was engaging and grotesque. I highly recommend it.

Michael Moreci consistenly elevates the pulp genres in which each works into reading experiences more challenging and interesting than they might have been under the pen of a less thoughtful writer. Burning Fields is a detective noir as well as a grim horror book, but it also becomes an allegory for colonialism, military adventuring, jihad, and their effects on ancient lands and cultures. The jazzy noir and heady philosophies of his "Roche Limit" books marry nicely here with the macabre aspects of his "Hoax Hunters" and other work.

Burning Fields is horror at its finest. The horrors of man truly know no bounds.

Compelling from beginning to end. Well done, Moreci!
