"A seedy noir vision of modern Ireland, where the cities are nests of crime, peat country is where the bodies are buried, and everyone speaks in filthy rat-tat-tat slang." -Publishers Weekly

"The story fizzes with black humour and local flourish, and its dialogue hums with the knotty cadences of Dublin speech. The effect is arresting." -
The Irish Times

"A damn good, feel bad comic." -

"A top flight crime book, managing to be brutal and vulnerable and funny as hell all at the same time." -

LIBRARY JOURNAL (STARRED) -- IllustratorShalvey (Injection Deluxe Edition. Vol. 1) proves himself an equally talented author in this noir mystery set in the mountains outside Dublin. After bungling a job for a crime boss, Killian wanders through an ancient bog with a pair of aging assassins in close pursuit. When Killian happens across a woman named Neev, who's covered in blood and claims to have no idea how she ended up so far outside the city, the two become unlikely companions. Shalvey has an incredible knack for dialog that crackles with energy tuned to the emotional pitch of a given scene-Killian and Neev bicker nervously as they seek refuge; the conversation between the assassins is made even more chilling by the matter-of-fact tone they take while debating how best to capture their quarry. A climax that takes place outside a small farmhouse on the edge of a graveyard forces all involved to come face-to-face with the repercussions of living outside the law, and questions whether it's possible to commit a sin so great there can be no chance of redemption.
VERDICT A fast-paced, thrilling noir perfect for fans of the Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips's
Criminal and David Lapham's Stray Bullets.

Very dark. Very Irish. Dialog was spot on. Art was very mood and eclectic. Would recommend. Noir but done in a European style.

Bog Bodies is a graphic novel by author Declan Shalvey, with artist Gavin Fullerton, colorist Rebecca Nalty, letterer Clayton Cowles, and curated by editor extraordinaire Heather Antos for Image Comics (2020).

Neev Madigan, a young girl, has been reported missing in Dublin. Killian, a young Irish mob low ladder henchman is set up to take the fall for a botched job, but manages to escape certain death, as those setting him up were too slow for their own good (mentally as much as physically, it’ll turn out). He flees with no direction in mind. Of course, what had to happen happens, and he stumbles on the missing girl, in a sorry state, in the neck of the woods. Turns out she’s a mean lass. And, Killian being a gangster, they probably deserve each other.

They now must escape Killian’s pursuers for both their sakes. But can Killian really saves himself and, furthermore, redeem himself ? And what exactly happened to Neev Madigan ?

This is a bleak story, making good use of good knowledge of Ireland, its landscapes, its bogs, its folklore, and the history of bog bodies (look that up - similar stuff happens with Los Angeles tar pits). You could see it first degree, as a fast paced chase in which two characters try to escape their pursuers, or you could see it as a story of redemption. Assuming redemption is even possible for one or the other of the four characters in this story.

The art is served by a clever use of color palette clearly differentiating stages and locations, allowing us to quickly read the atmosphere emanating from each one. There is a frequent use of panel shape, zoom-outs, and plain backgrounds to convey, for example, a feeling of lostness and despair. Also frequent are pages with four to five large horizontal panels, giving a cinematic feel to the ensemble

Bog Bodies is a satisfying read, even if I was expecting more depth, and maybe more content from it. I would still recommend it to the lovers of noir crime comics.

Bog Bodies grabs you by the throat from the get go and doesn't let up until it's done. An Irish noir with just enough humour to lull you into a smile before throwing you down a hillside in the rain. Gavin Fullerton's languid, organic style is perfectly complemented by Rebecca Nalty's colours that are used to expert effect when emphasising the transitions our "hero" goes through. Declan's created not so much a heroes journey but a scoundrel's flight and its urgent gasps for survival rise like hot breath on a freezing cold night from every page. A great example of what the medium can deliver. Buy it now!

Bog Bodies delivers an eerie, anxiety-filled, delight with every page turn. Declan’s pacing of the story begs the reader to turn the page with excitement and intrigue never faltering in its pace from beginning to end. Gavins art is haunting. The shadows, inks, pencils all build into a beautiful collage of unsettling scenery and silent beauty in the darkness of the British Isles. I highly recommend this new entry into the crime fiction genre with spectacular views on existential horror, betrayal, and morality. It was a delight from beginning to end.

An Irish crime thriller that deals with regret and consequences. Declan Shalvey breathes such life into his characters with his dialogue and Gavin Fullerton draws them beautifully. I took my time with every panel. A very powerful story.

Gorgeous art, great writing, and to-die-for colors. What's not to love?

Excellent little story, part crime tale, part something else that will give it away, so since I am no fekin edjit, I remain silent. Something goes wrong on a job and the Irish mob need to get rid of a body, no better place than the bog right? Thing is there could be something lurking in that swamp. Check this GN out and maybe you will find out. Well worth the read and look.

This comic it a bit of a one off. It starts off as a gangster story set in the hills surrounding Dublin city but it does not end in that genre. I won't give a synopsis as it would spoil the whole thing, it is only a short story. The art is good rather than great but its gritty darkness fits the story perfectly. The story is again good rather than great, it could have done with a bit of streamlining. What makes this comic standout great are two things. First, the characters, a pair of comically unpleasant monsters, a revolting and incompetent oik, a lost girl and a bonkers Sybil. Second, the dialog is all lovingly written in Dublin English, the characters rant and rave in poetic putdowns and gloriously colourful braggadocio. I enjoyed it no end as it reminded me of my adopted city from which I have been away far too long. Well worth the price.

Looks great, it's very funny despite the dark theme and really captured the local language. It is short but worth it.
