Waid & Samnee's High Voltage Widow
5 Stars
Waid & Samnee's High Voltage Widow
Mark Waid and Chris Samnee move over from the regular Daredevil book to this new Black Widow ongoing with non-stop action. This trade paperback collects the first six issues of the 2016 Black Widow Comic series. We also get a collection of all the regular covers and a handful of alternate covers.Mark Waid is one of the most continuously superior writers in comic book history. Chris Samnee burst on the scene several years ago and has been making a huge name for himself with his shadowy art work. Samnee comes from that Alex Toth and Darwyn Cooke school of art where the line work is simple, but every line is perfectly placed. The story starts out with a bang with the Widow on the SHEILD Helicarrier and stealing something. After her very dramatic escape the story shifts from Natasha's childhood as she returns to Mother Russia. This is my favorite part of the story as we learn more about the Red Room , where she was trained. We also see a new incarnation of the Red Room and new young agents being trained. The villain for this saga is a mysterious man know as the Weeping Lion.If I have any qualms for this collection is that the sixth episode tries to wrap up everything a little too quickly and we are left with many loose ends. I assume these will all be touched on in the second volume. My Highest Recommendation.

This issue is like the opening to a Bond film. It's a non-stop, well orchestrated & fast-paced chase scene with excellent hand-to-hand combat, gunplay, & vehicular fanfare-- and with some sci-fi elements thrown in! It's breathtaking, & as exciting as one could want in an opening! I love dialogue, but this is a fun Bond-like opening! Can't wait to see where it goes from here!

Mark Waid and Chris Samnee continue to redefine Marvel's classic characters. These first six issues easily stand on their own as powerful and iconic storytelling; it's just as gripping as the acclaimed Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey Moon Knight run from 2014. Waid proves that he can carry on the brutal and badass characterization from Nathan Edmondson's previous run, and nobody conveys clear action and movement like Chris Samnee. Matt Wilson also graces the book with his beautiful palettes, and it looks like this Daredevil team isn't going to stop delivering amazing comics anytime soon.

With a great story like this, tell me, why hasn't Marvel Movies turned this into a kick a&& movie? Great action sequences and a plot with plenty of twists and turns. If you haven't read this already, I'll wait here while you go. Buy. Read. This is good stuff, Maynard!

Waid and Samnee lay down a marker basically storyboarding an awesome black widow movie. The dialoguless first issue is a tour de force of action art that really shows off just how good Samnee is at telling a story in exciting and unpredictable ways. If your interest is even slightly piqued do yourself a favor and just pick this up you will be very happy you did! Now let's hope Marvel can keep them on this book for a long time!

I love this series and everything it is doing with Black Widow's past trying to haunt her. If marvel gets around to making a Black Widow movie (which they should) they should just adapt this book it would fit perfectly in the MCU with very little change necessary. This a great read I would recommend to anyone interested in the character.

Super good. Corners a little damaged, but over all in good shape.

The narrative abused several spy story tropes for the first 80% of the story, but the last act saved an otherwise uninspired story. Like many other books starring this character, this one still uses the "dark secrets" weakness as a crutch. Long-time fans of Black Widow will see where the story is going. And since this is an ongoing story, don't expect any level of closure or resolution.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced page turner with clever twists & great art

I was not a big fan of Black Widow to start with, but the story & art by Mark Waid & Chris Samnee convinced me to give it a try, and I was not disappointed. 1st part of 2, lots of twists, dynamic art & a real page turner. Refreshing to read how a character who isn't enhanced by godly powers or an armour can achieve her goals.
