I believe that Marguerite Bennett did an excellent job on this comic, though it could be better. I felt like she was explaining Kate's life a little too quickly. I knew what she was talking about because I know a lot about the DC Comics character, Batwoman. But I felt like it would be a little difficult for readers who are just learning about Batwoman and are just now being introduced to her. Kate Kane had a tragic life and her personality and likings are a little bit different and I didn't really enjoy how crammed it felt. I mean one minutes she was twelve and the next she was twenty. I felt like Bennett could have really gotten into the moment she met Batman because that sort of sparked her wanting to be this bold character. Those were my only thoughts, but otherwise I thought it was great .

pretty great but just a notch off point. Everything seemed smooth though, maybe a little too smooth.

If you read the entire Batwoman series that ran from 2011-2015 (or recently re-read them To tide you over while waiting for Batwoman: Rebirth), then those books, paired with the just-released 2-part Detective Comics "Batwoman Begins" story (#948 and #949), may cause you to shrug your shoulders a little at this first issue.

There isn't a ton of new information here, but this first issue is a good re-cap of prior events that you can get PLENTY of backstory on if you pick up Batwoman volumes 1-6 (though the last two volumes don't hold up well to the first four). Some of the panels in this issue are even pulled from said-books, if I'm not mistaken.

I was a little bummed that I didn't get panel-to-panel "new" story, but it makes sense because the series is starting over and they are re-establishing the character. Because of this, Batwoman: Rebirth #1 will be a great starter for those who are new to Batwoman in general, and if you are intrigued by this issue I would definitely recommend buying volumes 1-4 of the previous series right away. And after reading those, decide if you're up for volumes 5-6. That should hold you over until issue #2!
