Battlefields Vol. 6: Motherland (Garth Ennis' Battlefields) Kindle & comiXology

The sequel to 2009's "The Night Witches"! Lieutenant Anna Kharkova is posted to single-seat fighter aircraft and sent straight into action. Hardened and embittered by the loss of her comrades, Anna is only too keen to get her teeth into the enemy- but with Russian and German armies about to collide in the titanic battle of Kursk, her first flight with her new squadron may well be her last. And once the Soviet secret police start sniffing around, death in battle may well be preferable anyway. Soon horrific losses land Anna with the very last thing she wants: more responsibility, in the shape of eight young replacement pilots to be trained for combat.

But with the Battle of Kursk reaching its climax, rookies are nothing but lambs to the slaughter- and even the most experienced pilots find themselves flying on borrowed time. The former Night Witch meets her destiny, as Motherland- and the second series of Battlefields- conclude with a bang.

P. Brooks
5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Pleasing Sequel.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 7, 2011
This follows on from "Night Witches" the story of Women Pilots flying the PO2 "Sewing Machine" bi-plane known to the Nazi's as Nachthexan or "Night Witches". Since then Lieutenant Anna Kharkova has been transferred to a Single seat fighter regiment and is thrown in to the fight in the skies above the largest tank battle ever, Kursk.

First rate art work from Mr Bruan along with a well researched and engaging narrative from Mr Ennis. The story follows Anna as she is thrown into the meat grinder where the Russians exercise that saying "Quantity has a Quality all of it's own" in Human Lives, she falls again for her Regimental commander a wounded soul haunted by the deaths of his family in the German advance. The Characters are well balanced and Anna her self appears to be an Amalgam of Irina Sebrova and Polina Gelman women pilots who flew HUNDREDS of missions and received the USSR's highest awards for bravery.
Mr Ennis again writes a moving tale and whilst acknowledging the seemingly cold Russian willingness to throw away lives to stop the Germans he also acknowledges it was all they had to fight with then, the T34-85 and Sturmoviks in big numbers came later.

Will look forward to more in this series.
