Batman Noir: The Dark Knight Strikes Again (Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again) Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

BATMAN NOIR: THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN continues writer and artist Frank Miller’s dystopian Batman tale in gritty black-and-white inks as it has never been seen before.

It has been three years since the events of The Dark Knight Returns, and everything is just fine. At least on the surface. What the world at large doesn’t know is that it’s a total sham. A perfectly choreographed, pretty little world where everything that’s ugly, or even potentially disturbing, is all nicely wrapped up with neat little ribbons and swept under the carpet. Only he knows better. He’s watched it fester to near-breaking point, and it’s time for the only free man left who can effect any real change to bring it all down around their ears once and for all.

The Dark Knight returns once again with a vitality unseen since the first years of his war on crime. Together with his army of Bat-soldiers, including Carrie Kelley—formerly Robin, and now the new Catgirl—the Dark Knight wages a new war on a diseased world that’s become completely lost.

Collects Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again #1-3.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"As his peers grow older, Frank Miller just gets younger. DK2 is drawn with the energy and confidence of a teenager who knows in his heart that he's BETTER than Frank Miller, and He's ready to take the world by storm. This book is a startling, befuddling accomplishment. I love it." --Jame Kochalka

"His brutal yet elegant noir renderings, pulpy yet eloquent scripting, and throughly uncomprimising attitude make him one of the most distinctive voices in comics" --
Entertainment Weekly "IT Comic Book Project"

"Miller has pulled off a triumphant return to Gotham-sure footed, chilling, prescient, witty and sometimes laugh-out-loud-funny." --
USA Today

About the Author

Frank Miller began his career in comics in the late 1970s and rose to fame while drawing and then writing Daredevil for Marvel Comics. He was also the creative force behind Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One, and Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again. His works have not only redefined classic characters, but also revitalized the comics industry on a few occasions. His multi-award-winning graphic novel 300 was brought to full-blooded life in the 2007 movie of the same name. His creator-owned crime saga Sin City first hit the page in 1991, and then the silver screen in 2005, with Miller on board as co-director with Robert Rodriguez. The two returned to direct the sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, released in 2014 and featuring two new stories by Miller. In 2015, Miller returned to his bestselling series with the highly anticipated Dark Knight III: Master Race.

The product arrived in great shape and presented an excellent version of Frank Miller's follow up to TDKR. Stripped down to Miller's pen and ink work, I felt it made the story easier to follow than the original version with its gaudy color pallet. This Noir version is my favorite presentation of the story.

This is kind of an incredible book. I don’t usually go for these Noir editions but with TDK2 it made a lot of sense since the garish coloring can make it hard to follow the story. And it really is a whole different book in black and white. It’s a beautiful art book, the art doesn’t look ugly anymore it genuinely looks simplified and graceful and elegant. I’m thrilled with this purchase and might even end up getting other noir books to see if the experience is as different as with his one

The book was bent (the binder was damaged) in shipment. The book is fair, and what I expected.

We need something challenging in comics, tired of reading to many drawn out stories with house style art. I actually enjoy the book with the color more, but wanted to rate this for those who didn’t like the coloring. You’ll enjoy miller’s black and white

5.0 out of 5 stars El Batman de Miller golpea nuevamente
Reviewed in Mexico on April 13, 2018

4.0 out of 5 stars A very mixed bag from a master

This review is specifically for the Batman Noir black and white hardcover edition.

It goes without saying that Frank Miller is one of the true legends of the American comic book industry. When he came back to do a sequel for his most popular work in 2001, it was basically the comic book equivalent of the Star Wars prequels. Unfortunately, when we finally got it, it landed with a similar thud.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again is an absolute mess. It's story is lazy and nonsensical and the art was sloppy and rushed. And the cherry on top of the disaster sundae was the horribly out of place, ugly, dull computer coloring by Lynn Varley.

I've always wondered how this book would look if it were properly colored, or even not colored at all. Well, DC Comics continues to try to squeeze every last shekel out of it's few profitable books (see how many editions of Dark Knight, Killing Joke, Watchmen, and Sandman they continue to churn out year after year) so they brought this turkey back in print in black and white.

So why give it four stars? Well, I'm a big fan of Miller's art. Even when it's lazy and sloppy and nonsensical, it's still cool to see. And without that garish coloring, the art really does have a chance to stand out here for the first time.

It's also presented in a very nice oversized hardcover, which is always nice to have on a shelf and for those of us who prefer physical books to digital media, it's appreciated.

What struck me right away re-reading this was the fact that there are no backgrounds. Over three 80 page chapters Frank just plain didn't feel like drawing backgrounds. That's the kind of lazy, just out of college, early 90s Image era thinking that really helped tank comic books in the 90s. In the colored version it's not as obvious but it's impossible to hide in black and white: Frank was too lazy to draw a single background.

So what we have is basically an oversized sketch book. And on that merit alone, I'll give it four stars. It has zero value as a story. But if you look at it as a post-Sin City era oversized sketchbook of Frank Miller drawing silver age DC characters, then it's actually a lot of fun, cause all his signature styles are there. The oversized hands and feet, the craggy wrinkles in faces and clothing, the stark blacks and whites. For Frank Miller fanatics like myself, this is absolutely a worthy purchase even if you already own DKSR, and I know you do.

As a satisfying comic book, this book gets a zero. As a sequel to the greatest comic book ever published, this gets a negative five stars. As a goofy sketchbook of Frank just horsing around and taking DC Comics for an expensive ride? I'll give it four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Frank Miller story telling and art
Reviewed in Canada on July 15, 2023
The art is eye-candy and the story-telling is top-notch. The only down side, to me anyway: In the busier panels, the black & white often makes it difficult to separate characters and objects from one another, everything seems to blend together. Nicholas.
