If you're a fan of Ra's al Ghul (aka The Demon's Head), you're going to want to pick up this book. Collecting the Demon Trilogy into one book, each of the stories in this trade focus on Batman's interactions with Ra's al Ghul and his daughter, Talia.

In the first book, we get to see Bruce Wayne's short-lived marriage to Talia. Though there was barely enough time to consummate the marriage, Batman leaves Talia with child, planting the seeds for the stories that dominated the Batman serialized books for the past few years (
Batman and Son , Batman & Robin, Vol. 1: Batman Reborn , Batman & Robin, Vol. 2: Batman vs. Robin ).

In the second story we see Ra's attempts to live as a happily-married man, once again, as well as Batman's efforts to stop his latest world-ending agenda. Of the three books, this story is the weakest, though because it focuses on global warming, it still has some relevance, today.

The last book of the three is my personal favorite, as it tells the origin story of Ra's al Ghul. Having read this story, I like the character a whole lot more, and the climactic battle between Batman and Ra's at the end of the book is a great one!

I had heard that these stories were really good, and having read them, I can attest to the truth of that. This collection is one of the better Batman books that you can find, and the reprinting is selling very quickly, so you'll want to get one of these while they last. It's likely to be quite a few years before it is reprinted again.

"Batman: Birth of the Demon" reprints Mike W. Barr and Dennis O'Neil's trilogy of Ra's al Ghul stories with art by Jerry Bingham, Tom and Eva Grindberg, and Norm Breyfogle. DC originally published the stories as "Son of the Demon", "Bride of the Demon", and "Birth of the Demon". DC reprinted this collection to serve as a prequel to Grant Morrison's "Batman & Son", though the connection is somewhat loose. Ra's al Ghul links all three, though they are more self-contained than the collection would indicate to the reader.
Mike Barr's "Son of the Demon" is the strongest story in this collection, featuring Batman's marriage to Talia al Ghul and partnership with Ra's to fight a common enemy. Jerry Bingham's art perfectly matches the tone of the story and his original cover to the paperback collection, included at the end of this volume, looks like the poster to a "James Bond" film as befits the Barr's plot. In hindsight, certain elements meant to set the story in the real world date it, such as the U.S.S.R. and Mikhail Gorbachev, but they are brief and work for the narrative. Barr's "Bride of the Demon" is a close second, with a story pitting Batman and al Ghul against each other alongside an underlying ecological plot, timely in the early 1990s and still relevant in the 2010s. Like the previous story, this one recalls Ian Fleming's "James Bond." Tom and Eva Grindberg have their own artistic style, but they maintain a basic continuity with Bingham so that these two stories work well together. If the first and second stories can be read as two parts of a larger thematic whole, then Dennis O'Neil's "Birth of the Demon" stands alone, primarily focusing on Ra's al Ghul's backstory. Norm Breyfogle's artwork, though gorgeous, does not fit this tone of this collection. O'Neil, an expert Batman storyteller, evokes Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter" series more than Ian Fleming.
DC's reissue of these stories as a single volume features cover art by Andy Kubert. The modern style does not match the tone of the interior stories or artwork, though. Finally, this edition contains a printing error: the climax of "Son of the Demon" is missing one page; the printer substituted a page from "Bride of the Demon" in its place. Fans of Batman or Ra's al Ghul will find plenty to enjoy here, but the arbitrary nature of this collection means that the stories are a bit disjointed at times since the reader consumes them as one.

Awesome! The first chapter was a good, old-fashioned detective story, followed by some glorious 90's camp in Bride of the Demon. The origins of Ra's Al Ghul, revealed in the last chapter, Birth of the Demon, were compelling, and consisted of beautifully nuanced and gripping art and storytelling. That story completely changed my perspective on Ra's Al Ghul, as a character. This collection is a must-read for any serious Bat-fan.

As far as the physical collection goes, the prints were high quality and the paper was good enough. The only real complaint I have is that there is some minor page loss, due to the binding. They really should have adjusted the margins, but other than that, great collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential Combination of Stories

"Batman: Birth of the Demon" collects the following: 'Son of the Demon', 'Bride of the Demon' and 'Birth of the Demon'. 'Son of the Demon' is easily one of my personal favorites and serves as a prequel to Grant Morrison's 'R.I.P' story arc (Batman & Son, The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul, The Black Glove, R.I.P). While 'The Bride of the Demon' is interesting, it's my least favorite--though that is only because 'Son' and 'Birth' are far more elaborate in regards to content and the entire Batman/Ra's Al Ghul feud. 'Birth of the Demon' serves as an origin tale of Ra's Al Ghul. This is an absolute buy for any fan of Batman, an even better buy for those who favor Ra's Al Ghul in regards to villainy.

il s'agit plus d'une biographie de Ras al Ghul qui regroupe 3 series que des aventures de Batman. A reserver aux fans.
