Mike Carey seems to pull from both the original French comic and the 1960s movie, Carey's picks up on the original sexual liberation themes and the various repressive future. It does come off as cheese-cake to the point of prurience, but it never feels totally exploitative. Carey mimics some of the incoherence of the classic Heavey Metal magazine but in ways that are totally enjoyable. The vivid and colorful worldbuilding gives me a lot of patience for some the otherwise problematic or silly elements of this title.

'Barbarella Vol. 1' by Mike Carey with art by Kenan Yarar and Jorge Fornes is a graphic novel collecting the first 4 issues of the comic book.

Barbarella is minding her own business when she is captured by the Parosians, a theocratic race. She is genetically modified and imprisoned. She meets a fellow prisoner who clues her in to what the rulers are doing and enlists her in the fight.

I have never seen the original comics or the movie, but I know a little of the character. Just not enough to know if this is a faithful version of the character, but I did like these stories, the first more than the second. And I liked the art as well. The first artist more than the second. Not too bad for Sci-fi comics.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Dynamite Entertainment, and Netgalley. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Dynamite makes B-comics, that’s part of the publisher’s appeal. This series is the best thing they’ve done imo — it is a really well written and very nicely drawn series of space capers, with some excellent self contained stories, my favorite being a mystery on a transport ship. I hadn’t followed Mike Carey in the past but I will after this. The variant many variant covers are also fantastic, with many of the industry’s best doing portraits of Barbarella.

BARBARELLA, Volume 1: An interesting story that will challenge you. The writing and illustrations combine to increase the impact of the story. It will definitely leave you thinking about the world and how different each part of it can be...no matter how shocking that may be. Good story, good art!

These days a lot of comics disappear up their own arse. Not this, it's funny, sexy, packed with action and delightfully illustrated. Alan Moore it ain't, but sometimes comics just need to be fun.

The artwork is terrible, the artist doesn't appear to know what a woman looks like and as such Barbarella is depicted in a rough and scruffy fashion, a far cry from the beauty she should be. So disappointing.
