BECK Vol. 1 Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 100 ratings

BECK is back! Harold Sakuishi's wildly addictive 34-volume rock 'n' roll epic that redefined for a generation what manga could be returns—at last complete in English. Fourteen-year-old Yukio Tanaka is one heck of a boring guy. He has no hobbies, a weak taste in music, and only a small vestige of a personality. His shy and somewhat neurotic personality makes him his own worst enemy. Little does he know that his life will be forever changed when he meets rocker Ryusuke Minami, an unpredictable sixteen-year-old with a cool dog named Beck. Ryusuke has just returned to Japan from America, and when he inspires Yukio to get into music, the two begin a journey through the world of rock 'n' roll dreams! Lace up your Docs and head to the mosh pit—Harold Sakuishi's manga series that spawned the hit anime is back!

Reading this manga was great after my boyfriend and I have been watching the anime (for me it's a rewatch) I liked when they indicate its American English rather than Japanese English subtitles. In addition I love the art style its different than what I have read before. Because of these points I have to give this volume a 4 out of 5 stars because the cutoff of the volume was not ideally where I wanted it to end. If you want a music themed manga/anime that is not surrounded by women check this one out.

I was so surprised by how much i was enjoying reading this! Also definitely recommend reading on Kindle Prime Reading since they had the switch panel option and made it so convenient to read on my iPad. I hate reading small panels with manga sometimes but there was no issue reading this on the Kindle app! :)

I had no idea who Harold Sakuishi was and have never read this genre before. I got to Beck by reading the Seven Shakespeare's by Sakuishi that was offered for free via Prime. That too was good although I don't have access to nor have finished the entire series yet.
Beck didn't "look" good to me at first simply by the cover. I downloaded the digital version and gave it a whirl after I couldn't find anything else that looked interesting. To my great surprise, this is well written, funny, interesting, and cool all at once. The basis around good music is a bonus for those who have a well rounded library.
I found myself drawn into the various story lines and literally blew through the initial 14 volumes that are currently available. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the rest!

There are numerous adult themes that I wouldn't necessarily want my kids reading/seeing but it IS a story of a 14 year old boy basically coming of age. Sakuishi does an awesome and humorous job of depicting the school boys various urges and reactions. I laughed out loud a few times. The developing relationships between Koyuki (the main character) and his friends as well as his love interests is well done. There's tension, anticipation, letdowns, great moments, etc. There's cool characters, funny characters, bullies, good friends, etc.

If you like music, graphic novels and/or fun stories this is a great series to read.

Everybody has their own dream. Me too. I wanna be a rock star when I started listening rock n roll music. Be a guitar player. But I did not. But rock music became my spirit forever. I read this manga probably 20 years ago. Consequences, I found it in amazon kindle, Bead it again without any hesitation. The dream is back. I picked my guitar and cleaned the dust on the neck. It looks like I was that kid who has a rock dream.

Um mangá de música, comédia e slice of life extremamente divertido. Tomara que alguma editora brasileira ou a própria Kodansha lance fisicamente.
