Loved the inclusion of Ghost Rider and Sarah Walters as Hulk. Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America had great banter that kept the story funny and nostalgic throughout. Definitely a great start to the series that leaves on a cliffhanger without feeling totally unresolved.

Jason Aaron, the Mighty Thor scribe who has been building an entire new mythos for Thor in the past few years, takes over the "Fresh Start" era of the Avengers by bringing together a solid team of classic stand bys and fun new heroes. With the recent runs of the Avengers being just so-so and Marvel seemingly rethinking their approach to pushing legacy heroes (for better or worse), the classic trinity of Thor Odinson, Tony Stark, and Steve Rogers reunite to reform the Avengers. Along for the ride are Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Jennifer Walter's Hulk, and Robbie Reyes' Ghost Rider. Giving the spotlight to Walter's new Hulk form is a fun way of shaking up the Big Green's place on the roster and Reyes' spotlight has been growing in recent years thanks to his cameo on Agents of SHIELD. The artwork from Ed McGuinness is good (I didn't care for some of his work during the late 90's and 2000's like on Emperor Joker, but he is fine here) and the storytelling is solid. The story, as it is, is mostly bombastic Avengers vs new Celestials. With Aaron fundamentally changing the history of Marvel's 616 Earth and its history (thanks to the new Celestials and more stories featuring a young Odin's "Avengers One Million BC" from the recent Marvel Legacy one shot) there is a bit too much exposition, but the book is a great first start for the new team and honestly feels a lot like Scott Snyder's recent Justice League No Justice story arc (giant, intense space gods bearing down on Earth). Unlike No Justice, which was sadly rushed in my opinion, this arc has just enough room to breathe and go all in on over the top action (Hulk and Thor grow to the size of Frost Giants at one point to fight the Celestials). Great read and I can't wait for more!

Jason Aaron did some incredible things with Thor when he was writing that book, but also some not so incredible things. His Avengers though, from the stuff I've actually read, has been wildly all over the place. Starting here at the beginning now I find that's really always been the case. Aaron does start things off big, pitting the barely reassembled Avengers against one of the most powerful threats in the Marvel Universe. As a new breed of Dark Celestials descend upon the Earth, it's up to Earth's Mightiest Heroes to stop them from finishing what was started millions of years ago. The inclusion of the Celestials is a big part of what drew me to this collection as they've always fascinated me. Aaron changes a lot about their history with the planet here, and though the retcon doesn't entirely work it's nothing that breaks continuity. No, the biggest problems lie with story and pacing. The plot does have substantial gravitas but it still manages to feel juvenile and Aaron has a bad habit of having his dialogue explain everything that is happening even though we can plainly see it for ourselves. Meanwhile the biggest moments in the book happen without any build up and are then done just as quickly. It leaves the story feeling much shorter than it actually is, even though the events span less than a day of actual time. Then there's the fact that the characters involved come off as one note, but that can be forgiven as a team book like this doesn't always have the room to give everyone a spotlight. I'm disappointed too that the collection ends so abruptly, leaving it to the next volume to reveal what happens after the big battle. Lastly, I have a problem with the Loki presented here but if I understand the subtle twist at the end correctly it could be justified. As the predominant artist for the volume, I'll be focusing solely on Ed McGuinness' work. I actually like it overall but it can feel static and unmoving in a lot of panels. There is something worth reading here, even if it seems far too childish at times. I'd say I'd be getting around to the next part soon but I frankly have a terrible track record of actually following through on that. We shall see.

The main three are back together after being separated for a while and they are back with newer members Robbie Reyes ghost rider, and Jennifer Walters who is now just called hulk instead of she hulk. Along with black panther, and doctor strange. If that doesn't sound cool enough loki is the main bad guy in this book it's really cool and definitely up there with the (2018) Spider-Man book reboot.

I’ve seen s lot of hate for this volume and I do t k ow why? The artwork is beautiful, vibrant and each turn of the page is a treat. The dialogue is a bit thin at times but generally manages to bring out the personality of the characters (very much lifted from the MCU films). The story wasn’t massively deep (it is a comic after all). All in all it was an enjoyable read. I’m not going to rush out for volume 2 but it’s on my list as a result of reading this one.
