Roy William Thomas, Jr. (born November 22, 1940) is an American comic book writer and editor, who was Stan Lee's first successor as editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics. He is possibly best known for introducing the pulp magazine hero Conan the Barbarian to American comics, with a series that added to the storyline of Robert E. Howard's character and helped launch a sword and sorcery trend in comics. Thomas is also known for his championing of Golden Age comic-book heroes – particularly the 1940s superhero team the Justice Society of America – and for lengthy writing stints on Marvel's X-Men and Avengers, and DC Comics' All-Star Squadron, among other titles.

Thomas was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2011.

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2021
Back when I'd first begun reviewing comics on Amazon I had this crazy idea. It was to do a series of reviews based around one of my favorite Marvel Comics characters, the Mighty Thor. These were to cover his series milestones, meaning every hundred issues, and it was a worthwhile experience. I'd always intended to do it again, only with a different title, but never made the time. At last though I've returned to the idea, with the Avengers as my new choice to follow. The Black Knight has called upon every former and present Avenger there was at the time to face together a challenge that might very well doom three worlds if left unchecked. I've never had anything negative to say about the legendary Roy Thomas's writing before, and that remains unchanged with this comic. He writes an absolutely fantastic story with perfectly suitable stakes for a milestone such as this. Though short in length it doesn't actually feel it and though there isn't a lot of space for all the Avengers they nevertheless prove themselves to be Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The issue seems in part to be the culmination of a few different story threads but it is easy enough to follow without knowing those specifics. Barry Smith's artwork is also simply fantastic when compared to the story itself. It's the shading he uses that really helps it stand out. What a great way to kick off this review series. Unfortunately, the next part is not likely to be anything close.

Roy Thomas? Barry Smith? I loved them on Conan, but this collaboration stunk! Poor art. Lousy story. One star is generous.
