I can not truly give a good review of this volume, as it is the first of a multi-volume comic adaptation of the Attack on Titan: Before the Fall, Kuklo Unbound light novels.

From what I have seen, however, this manga is promising. The art is vivid, and brings to mind the scattered images in the light novel by Ryo Suzukaze. Given that the illustrator is different for the manga than the LN, this was a great job on his part to capture the spirit of the illustrations in the LN.

The adaptation seems to take the point of view of switching betwixt an omniscient pov and the pov of Sharle Innocencio. The pacing, the choice of how to distill many pages down to a the choice of panels and scenes shown, all of it worked really well.

I'm truly impressed with this first volume and look forward to future ones. Highly Recommended.

[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book. For one, I didn’t read the synopsis, because I wanted it to be a surprise. But I also didn’t know how much influence Hajime Isayama had, so I didn’t know how far it would stray, if there would be similar characters, what the art would look like, or what.

First of all, this story is really only set in the same world. There are none of the same characters, as far as I can tell. It’s a completely different story.

Also, the artwork is very different. It’s honestly prettier than the original. I know that some people don’t like Isayama’s artwork, but I’ve grown used to it. Still, this one is prettier, nicer to look at. (Also, it has a lot more ink used, I noticed.)

This story stars Kuklo and Sharle, who are both in pretty bad situations. Kuklo is possibly a titan, or able to be a titan, or something. He was born in a messy situation involving a titan, but he looks like a normal boy. And he’s being held prisoner by a merchant, abused by the man’s son. Sharle is the man’s daughter, being generally ignored and forced to marry someone she doesn’t want to. Their meeting isn’t ideal, but Sharle quickly decides to help Kuklo, and feed him. And it’s obvious that Kuklo is starving, in a horrible state of mind, doesn’t really know how to talk.

I rather quickly grew to like both characters. The ending was a rather big cliffhanger, too, and now I’m really eager to read the next one, to see what happens next. I want to see Kuklo mature, learn, and become more of a person, as well as see what he intends to do next. I want to see Sharle mature, a lot. I'm intrigued by the plot, but this volume seemed a little more character driven, whereas the original series is more plot driven. I definitely don't mind, though.

The one real aspect that this volume was missing, though, I think, is the character development. While I did grow attached and interested in them, there wasn’t a lot of development. Isayama definitely flourishes in that area, where Suzukaze (I think?) doesn’t quite as much. I didn’t get quite as much of a feel for all of the characters, definitely not as fast, as I did in the original. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, and there is still time for more to happen.

I’m excited for the next volume, and a little bummed that I have to wait so long.

This is good i seen all the episode of attack of the titan anime and right now when i see this book before the fall i was thinking in my head going back to history where did the titans come from i really want to know i got so many questions but this book will be a start. When i start reading it the son of the titan probably she was pregnant but when the titan ate her i think dna right there giving birth of a titan child. The titan son lock up in a dungeon probably through his all year long and of course being tortured i think but still standing strong. Well don't want to spoil it but its good reading.

There's potential here. I like the story so far and that's been a constant in the series. The story has always been interesting and always managed to keep me wanting to find out what happens next. So there's no issue there. My real issue is the lack of length. This book is mostly art and can be finished in 20-30 minutes, If that. I don't feel that I got my money's worth out of it and that's pretty disappointing.

I get that art is a big part of it but it's called a graphic novel for a reason. There should have been more of a story behind it. There should have been a bit more dialogue and exploration rather than the kind of bare bones that we got. I don't wanna waste 8 bucks a pop on a volume that I am gonna finish in minutes. I'd rather just borrow the books off someone or download them. Now if these were 5 bucks or even 6 at the most, I wouldn't really mind. Anything more than that is a bit much for a very quick read and it's very rare to ever revisit these volumes once finished.

Easy review of you love attack on Titan you will love this. Sometimes the action is a little hard to follow but who cares. They could write a novel and I'd read it. Awesome series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ok book, great seller

The book arrived really quickly which is great, the book content however wasn't. Hopefully the second part will bring a bit more depth and excitement. I don't want to ruin the story for anyone but it's pretty basic and straight forward and doesn't offer much in comparison to the main story line. Like I said, it simply might just be the slow lead up to something bigger and better, hopefully the second part will have more to offer.

I enjoyed this. I love the Attack on TItan series and this fits in well; it managed to evoke mild emotions of disgust, rage and curiosity, which is what I expected. I enjoyed the artwork.

I feel it is a good start to the story of what happened before the fall. I am looking forward to the next volume and finding out more of this world before "modern" times in the AoT world.

I feel this first volume is setting up for a great story! You also get a "pilot" alternative beginning and a comedy short story "attack on titan junior high" other than the shortness no complaints here, would definitely buy if your a fan.
