Jim Starlin introduced not only Thanos, but Shang-Chi and many other memorable characters. After seemingly killing both Adam Warlock and Thanos in one of Marvel's earlier multi-title cosmic arcs - for which he won two Eagle Awards - Starlin wrote Marvel's first graphic novel, The Death of Captain Marvel. At DC, under the pseudonym "Steve Apollo," he co-wrote Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes, including the series' pivotal 250th issue; he later wrote Batman, including the controversial "Death in the Family" storyline, and the Batman: The Cult miniseries, and collaborated with Mike Mignola on Cosmic Odyssey, exploring themes similar to those he introduced at Marvel. Returning to Marvel to write Silver Surfer, he resurrected Adam Warlock and Thanos, both of whom figured prominently in a veritable franchise of miniseries he both wrote and penciled: Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, Infinity Crusade, Infinity Abyss and more, plus the Adam Warlock and the Infinity Watch monthly. Less typical work included Daredevil/Black Widow: Abbatoir and the Punisher: POV miniseries. In his later DC work - including Rann-Thanagar War, Death of the New Gods, and the post-52 titles Mystery in Space and Strange Adventures - Starlin continued his explorations of cosmic themes. At Devil's Due Publishing, he wrote and penciled the miniseries Cosmic Guard/Kid Kosmos.

A good read, if it will last long enough to be read.

A good read, if it will last long enough to be read.
So, I received "Artifacts Vol. 1", I sat down and read it just a few minutes ago.I can tell you it's a good read and the art is really nice. Panels are done well and I couldn't find any sloppiness with the art or the layout. However, this TPB gets one star for the simple fact that it fell apart in my hands as I read it. I'm not joking, half of the pages just slid out and I will have photos posted very soon, showing just how terrible the binding is. It's obvious TOP COW has no eye for quality and if it's an ongoing problem then they don't care about their loyal fanbase. If you love comics and love to collect them as well, then my advice to you is: !AVOID! this TPB like a bad case of the herpes. It will leave you burned and itching mad.It delivers a good story but in the end you'll just have a bunch of well drawn small posters to put on your wall.

Top Cow's Artifacts began as a series that was going to change the universe of all the artifacts bearers. Great collection of the first issues. Must read for fans of Witchblade and The Darkness.

Excelent begining for an epic story! this Top Cow crossover seems to be very interesting.

The downsides are the binding: 5 minutes after I started reading the pages started to fall apart

Art is ok, not much fan of Broussard, but helps to make a dark atmosphere.

I allready read Tom Judge, witchblade, darkness and broken trinity. Don't know if a new reader would understand everything

very recommended for top cow fans

The only thing that distracts me from putting it in the like ratings is a chunk of it fell off the spine through normal handling on the 3rd day since delivery.
Otherwise its a pretty cool story, esp for those who wandered off the Darkness title for awhile cause of art/ story wise.

The fate of the world balances on thirteen weapons and items of immense power spread around the world and held by a diverse group of people. In the first act of Top Cow Production's Artifacts series, a mysterious being sets out to collect the thirteen artifacts that will give him complete power over the world. Artifacts Volume 1 by Ron Marz and Michael Broussard collects the first four issues of the Artifacts series of the biggest event in the near twenty year history of Top Cow Productions.

The story begins with the kidnapping of the daughter of two of the artifact bearers. The kidnapping kicks off a recruitment drive as the possessors of the artifacts are drawn into the opposing sides of the oncoming conflict. There is the side of good, who know the danger in the thirteen artifacts being brought together and there is the side of evil, who serve the mysterious figure that set this battle in motion.

With a large cast of characters spanning the entirety of the Top Cow Comics Universe, writer Ron Marz has taken great care to make Artifacts accessible to new readers as well as bring in the history of the characters to add fun story elements for longtime fans. Marz tells the story at a rapid pace while keeping you on the edge of your seat and getting you invested in the heroes of the story. The heroes are not your garden variety, flashy colored super heroes they are real people that have been given extraordinary powers. Marz shows why you should care about these people as they go through life altering changes.

In the introduction to this collection, Top Cow Founder Marc Silvestri says artist Michael Broussard deserves his position in the awe inspiring list of artists who have worked for Top Cow Productions. Given the legendary status of Top Cow's talent this is not feint praise. Broussard's art in this series is stunning. The detailed pencil work is gorgeous as he captures the look and feel of the real world while transforming it into a world full of fantasy. The art is embellished by a talented group of inkers: Rick Basalda, Sal Regla, Joe Weems, Dulce Brassea and Jason Gorder. The varied group of inkers is able to keep the book's look consistent and allow Broussard's pencil work and design to shine on each page.

The decision: Artifacts Volume 1 by Ron Marz and Michael Broussard is an excellent way to jump into the Top Cow Universe. A good story should make you want to learn more about the characters, not be fearful of their history. Marz does just that but allow you to read the story without prior knowledge of the characters. After reading this you will want to read more about Witchblade and the Darkness. The collection kicks off with a prologue that outlines what is known about the thirteen artifacts. The book then jumps into an enjoyable, fast paced story of adventure. The series is a lot of fun as powerful super teams are formed to begin a war over the artifacts.

This collection is capped off with an extensive cover gallery showcasing the various covers for the individual issues by stellar artists like Dale Keown and Ryan Sook. The book is finished with a commentary by Marz, Broussard and Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik about the story.

Artifacts Vol. 1 is an amazing read. But on that note, the binding is horrible. I'm glad I work in a Library and was able to repair it myself, otherwise I would have been very upset. I can overlook the cheap binding. This time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 29, 2012
The artwork in this Title so far is fantastic, the storyline is very good to add to that.

Having not read any of the other Top Cow universe titles im glad that this Trade Paperback also included issue #0, this was a good addition as it introduces all the main characters and settles you in when you flick through the pages of issue 1 and so forth.

I will most likely be buying Artifacts Volume 2.

Book arrived quickly though...
