Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Archie Andrews and the Riverdale teens have been reimagined by Eisner Award-winning writer Waid and "Saga" artist Staples with a fresh, 21st-century spin in time for the franchise's 75th anniversary. While still keeping the boy-next-door charm and sweet sensibility of the original comics, this volume, which collects the first six issues of the new iteration, has a more modern twist. Blonde Betty is a baseball-slugging, down-to-earth car mechanic; Archie is a hapless but cool, guitar-playing teen with a streak of bad luck; and new girl Veronica Lodge is a sleek reality TV alum with a knack for dating boys whom her rich father wouldn't approve of. School dances, breakups, mean boys, gossip, and, of course, love triangles make up some of the drama that peppers each issue. Flashbacks and backstory for each character are presented, so readers new to the series won't feel lost. The art, with contributions by Wu and Fish, reflects the modern vibe of this redesign, complete with edgy but somehow timeless clothing; diverse secondary characters, including Betty's multiple love interests; and a gem-toned palette that lets this comic pop off the shelves. The humorous narrative especially makes the philosophical Jughead, who seems to be teeming with ennui, crackle on every page he appears. Variant covers are featured throughout, and a preview of a Jughead-focused comic is appended. VERDICT Archie is reborn, and fans and new readers alike will be clamoring for more.—Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

Archie Vol.1 Makes My Heart Happy
I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this in my local bookstore. I casually read bits and pieces of the original Archie comics and always had a thing for the story and characters. Naturally, I ended up ordering Archie Vol. 1 on Amazon! This was a really satisfying read for me. The story is pretty damn good and those who aren't familiar with the original Archie comics can still get on board with this reboot! That is, if romance, a little mischief and lots of heart are your thing! In Archie, the characters really make the story. The characters (mainly Archie, Betty, Jughead, even Veronica and Reggie at times) are so charming and lovable in their own unique way. I find so many things about Archie and the gang to be SO ENDEARING, my heart can hardly handle it.I won't give away any details about what transpires in this volume, but I really felt for Betty! And I'm definitely rooting for her in the Archie volumes to come.If you are a fan of the original Archie comics, this reboot will be lots of fun! Maybe even a bit nostalgic. Somehow the team behind this new Archie graphic novel managed to lend more complexity to the story, while maintaing that "light-hearted" feel of the original Archie comics. As someone who prefers revamping of classic stories to be done with serious care, I can say that this reboot feels new, but not different!Cannot wait for Vol. 2!

I am a huge Archie and Jughead fan. My dad introduced me to them through his collection probably when I was 5 or 6 years old and I loved the shenanigans they would get in together or on one of their solo ventures. I have my own huge collection of Jughead and Archie comics so when my dad told me they rebooted Archie with a modern look I wasn't immediately excited but I was definitely intrigued. It's hard to do a reboot of something that's already so universally adored and especially something that's been around for over half a century but Mark Waid and Fiona Staples did it. This series is wonderful and it brings a whole new depth to Archie and his friends. It puts them in real world problems for teens, nothing too dangerous or ridiculously corny like "Degrassi," but it's a believable drama that makes you care even more for these teenagers. Don't worry, the series isn't kneel bent all over drama, it's just enough sprinkled here and there to make a story move along. It doesn't sacrifice the original and lovable way the original cute and funny stories were written before. You will definitely see that Mark Waid really understands Archie and his friends and he knows how to write them. Another thing that is cool about this new "Archie," is that it's not a new story every issue that doesn't acknowledge what happens in the previous issue. It's kind of like watching a series of Archie's life because, so far, it's all part of one big story, "The Lip Stick Incident."
Fiona Staples really nailed the modern look of all these characters, her work is so beautifully done and it makes me wonder why I haven't read anything with her work before because she is definitely amazing.
I think anyone that loves the original "Archie" books will love this new series and anyone that's never read "Archie" will have a nice and clean way of being introduced to the world or Riverdale. 5/5 :)

I read a lot of Archie comics as a kid and was interested in the "start over" modern release. I went for the Kindle + Comixology version so I can read it on my pad and not have to find storage once I am done. I've used Comixology for years and was happy when they were absorbed by Amazon. When I bought this it showed up on my Kindle reader, and in my Comixology account. Very nice. This dual version was also cheaper from Amazon than buying it directly from Comixology. Lesson learned. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy off of Amazon. I'll also say that as my eyes get weaker I find it much easier to read comics on Kindle or Comixology readers than paper.

So this is the first 12 issues of the reboot, rolled into one for a good price. I enjoyed the story line and am looking forward to the 2016 release. Yes, I'm cheap. I'd rather pay $12 for this yearly release than pay $3 an issue each month for individual issues.

I never read much Archie back in the day. But I do love Fiona Staples' art, and Mark Waid's comedic touch.
It's a book geared at teenagers, or people who read young adult. That's for certain. Personally, even though I'm a married 29 year old man, I thought it was pretty fun and easy to read. My kid could read it when he's older, there's nothing offensive or risque in it.
It does leave a cliffhanger of sorts at the end of each chapter, which is fun to see who does what next, and what each character's are going to do. It's a Soap Opera, a very mild one at that. Who is friends with who, what is the new enemy gonna do now, what is this one person's real motive? Pretty cool stuff, actually.
It may not be for everyone, honestly.
But I'm gonna try out Volume two when it comes out.

I was surprisingly pleased with this reboot and how faithful it was to the characters I remembered. Both the intro (by artist Fiona Staples) and the afterword (by author Mark Waid) relate how much thought went into this project. It has been a lot of years since I read comics and one thing I don't remember is the artwork changing so often. This volume has six issues and Fiona Staples drew my favorites by far. In fact, by the time I got to the Jughead preview in the back, I realized I had some pretty strong opinions about the various artists and am left wondering why the Jughead world would look so different from Archie. I plan to keep up and have already checked on the status of Vol 2 and 3 at the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting reboot
Reviewed in Canada on March 29, 2019
I was genuinely surprised at how good this reboot of Archie is, while staying true to the original. Archie remains a good-natured bumbling teen. Betty Cooper is more competent, but still pines for the red-headed twit next door. Jughead has no interest in romance, but has a bottomless appetite. Reggie is a good looking sleeze. And, Veronica remains the spoiled rich girl, a bit more exotic looking, and extremely self-centred.

In the old comics, the "gang" seemed more like college-aged kids, but in this reboot, they are definitely senior high school students, with all the angst and foolishness that goes with that age group. If you are a fan of the old Archie comics, this is well worth your attention.
