Archer & Armstrong Vol. 2: Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior (Archer & Armstrong (2012- )) Kindle & comiXology

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

No one in the Valiant Universe is more dangerous or more experienced in the art of war than the undying Eternal Warrior. After thousands of years on the battlefield, he's a master of strategy and weaponry, an unrelenting force of nature capable of dismantling entire armies with little effort and less conscience. His brother Armstrong, on the other hand, likes to read poetry and drink beer. Maybe that's why they had such a bad falling out? But now — after years apart — the Eternal Warrior has a new mission: destroy young Obadiah Archer, Armstrong's best-est new buddy and teammate in the war against The Sect. And, like it or not, Valiant's history-smashing adventure duo are about to feel the brunt of the Eternal Warrior's fist and steel.

Collecting ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #5-9 by New York Times best-selling author Fred Van Lente (Amazing Spider-Man) and critically acclaimed artist Emanuela Lupacchino (X-Factor), the second volume of the series that IGN calls "hilarious and action packed" slams into high gear with a savage manhunt straight through the heart of the Valiant Universe.

The second volume of “Archer and Armstrong” is another feather in Valiant’s cap. Fred Van Lente offers another exciting story with two contrasting lead characters. Add in a strong supporting cast and funny villains and Van Lente continues to excel in developing and pulling the strings on a fun group of characters. The plot can often come close to overwhelming the story but Van Lente is shrewd enough to keep naive Archer and decadent and funny Armstrong on center stage and that guides readers through the story. The art team does an excellent job, adding to the book. This continues to be an excellent comic and readers who liked the first volume will enjoy this one. Highly recommended.

Van Lente does a solid job mixing the high action tone of the Eternal Warrior and Archer's backstory with Armstrong's satire. Fast-paced, coherent, light in touch, Van Lente isn't trying to reinvent the genre, but tell an effective story within the context Valiant universe. The satire isn't entirely coherent in its targets, and the geomancer plotlines in Valiant can be confusing, but it's highly enjoyable. The art by Emanuela Lupacchino and Guillermo Ortego, while not particularly innovative, is quite good.

Loving this duo more and more. Volume two was excellent. Learning more about Archer was interesting and seeing what will happen next excites me about this series.

I love this comic! It is absolutely fantastic. I really enjoyed volume 1 and it just gets better with volume 2. It's hilarious for a start with lots of pop culture references and poking fun at everything: global warming, the top 1%, religion and car chases. A group called Null is trying to void the earth and the complete arc is contained within this volume. There is paranormal magic-y stuff going on and the action is like James Bond. One of the flashback scenes even has a character working for SMERSH! I'm really into this. Lots of fun with a solid action story.

God I have not been entertained by a story in so long. This is the best story series I have found to like.

Archer & Armstrong Vol 2.

Where do you go when your last volume has saved the world already? Save all of reality. There's a problem sometimes when comics try to one up storylines, and I feel like Archer & Armstrong did that to a big degree. It kills the emotion and the tension when you've already saved the world from an epic conspiracy so fast with ancient artifacts... only to find that there's some reality destroying plotline. But let's back up a little. This book starts with The Eternal Warrior chasing down our heroes, as they are responsible for the death of the Geomancer. This part of the story is actually fun. There are wonderful character moments for Armstrong here, which we didn't get a ton of in the first volume. The storyline of the new Geomancer is really cool too, and I like her as much as the main characters, perhaps more. Unfortunately that's where my enjoyment of this storyline pretty much ends. I mentioned that Van Lente went a bit political in the first volume with the 1%, etc. Well, he pushed that a lot harder in the back half of this story, really laying it on thick at points, and then going into global warming atop that. When it's not subtle, it throws a reader out of a story. That happened to me combined with the "out epicing" the first volume's storyline... lost a lot of the luster for me.

The art is a bit on the cartoony side, colors aren't super defined. I do think that the cover of this volume which is the cover of Issue 7 is one of my favorite covers valiant produced. It's got our characters in crosshairs but then Armstrong with a taunting sign saying "Good luck with that" -- that cover evokes the fun of oldschool comics, which I really like. Kay, the new Geomancer, is drawn really gorgeous in a couple of panels, which actually stick out in my memory too. Overall, the art is servicable but not something I'd be going back to this book for more on.

Honestly, not sure I want to continue with this series. I haven't decided yet, but unless it really tones down and focuses on character and lays off of the political preaching some, I'm tepid on it. I heard the original A&A was total off the wall hi jinx... and i'd actually like to see a little more of that. Could be some good slapstick between these two characters. 6/10

This volume introduces us to the Eternal Warrior and the Geomancer, Kay McHenry, two of my favorite Valiant characters. The volume continues the excellent story being told by Van Lente.
