Angola Janga: Kingdom of Runaway Slaves Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 51 ratings

An independent kingdom of runaway slaves founded in the late 16th century, Angola Janga was a beacon of freedom in a land plagued with oppression. In stark black ink and chiaroscuro panel compositions, D’Salete brings history to life; the painful stories of fugitive slaves on the run, the brutal raids by Portuguese colonists, and the tense power struggles within this precarious kingdom. At turns heartbreaking and empowering, Angola Janga sheds light on a long-overlooked moment of resistance against oppression.

Review

"A magnificent history of resistance."
Publishers Weekly

"A powerful work, and absolutely beautiful to boot."

"In striking black-and-white illustrations using a variety of pens and brushes, [D'Salete] tells deeply unsettling stories about the institution [of slavery]'s brutality in his country."
NPR

"An awe-inspiring history ... masterfully drawn."
LA Times

"The energy of D'Salete's images―the angled perspectives, the chiseled details, the abrupt close-ups, the streaked strokes of his shading―are a match for his equally powerful subject matter."
PopMatters

"D'Salete fleshes out an important episode of Black resistance to slavery in the heart of the Amazon in this galloping 424-page graphic novel."
The Daily Star

Brazilian Slavery is a topic not too often discussed in the English language, however it was an peculiarly brutal institution due the close proximity to Africa which allowed for slaves to be replaced more quickly. Therefore it was more cost efficient to work a slave to death and buy a new one than worry about keeping what you have alive past the years harvest in may cases.

This is an eye opening look at a rebel slave colony (Mocambo / Quilombo) trying to survive in the rainforest of Brazil and well worth a read to anyone interested in a look at this harsh period in central american history.

Great supplemental reading would be "Children Of Gods Fire".

This is a waste of time on Kindle. The opening section is in unreadably small print that cannot be enlarged. The engaging cartoon style would be a pleasure to read if the print were not so small. This was a wasted purchase.
