American Vampire Vol. 8 Kindle & comiXology
Welcome to the '60s. It's a turbulent time to be an American-especially an American Vampire. While the rest of the nation uneasily watches the spread of communism across the world stage, the three surviving Abominus Americana-Pearl Jones, Skinner Sweet and Calvin Poole-are fighting a battle much closer to home. An evil right underneath their feet.
The Gray Trader, the nearest thing to the devil this world has ever seen, is summoning an ancient beast from the depths of the earth. The original and oldest evil, this abomination would devour the world if freed. To prevent it, the American Vampires will have to fight the Gray Trader on two fronts, with one team targeting a top-secret government stronghold known as Area 51 and the other heading up-way up-into the final frontier!
But can such an ambitious plan succeed when one of their own has already been compromised by the Beast?

Editorial Reviews
Review
“It's rare that a comic book this thoroughly developed and enjoyable comes around, offering readers a ground-level chance to enter a new world. It's even more rare when it happens for a second time.”—Comic Book Resources
“It’s clear that Snyder, Albuquerque, and the entire creative team poured their hearts into the work — and it shows. Once again, AMERICAN VAMPIRE proves to be one of those "must read" issues for Vertigo and horror fans.”—Newsarama

About the author
I write comic books! Growing up, I always wanted to write comics, but I ended up trying my hand at fiction first. I got my MFA from Columbia University, published a book of short stories with The Dial Press in 2006 called Voodoo Heart, then finally broke into comics in 2009 and haven't looked back since. I've worked extensively for DC Comics, writing such titles as Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, the comic event books DC Dark Knights Metal and Death Metal, and Swamp Thing, among others. I've also created a number of series with some great co-creators and partners -- books like We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Nocterra, American Vampire, Wytches, the Wake, AD: After Death, and more... I live in NY with my wife, Jeanie and our three boys. I am also a big fan of Elvis Presley.

On the plus side? Rafael Alberquerque’s art continues to be a highlight, balancing bright colors with stark linework in a way that perfectly emulates the 60’s era of the story. There’s also a genuine thrill to watching Scott Snyder slowly begin to move all of the series’ accumulated narrative chess pieces into their final positions, particularly as we ramp up towards the grand finale.
On the not-so-plus side? Much of the storytelling here feels overly convoluted – a rarity for “American Vampire” – and some of the character choices – especially amongst the core leads – seem strangely unmotivated, almost as if Snyder didn’t have the time to fully flesh them out.
Overall, Volume 8 is still more “good” than “bad”…but for a series that has practically embodied narrative excellence up til now, it’s hard not to be a little confused – and disappointed – by some of its late game storytelling decisions.

The climactic nature of this high stakes adventure changes reader's perceptions of the protagonists as Snyder throws a new wrench into this compelling narrative. The story flows well thanks to the exciting visuals and the use of shading helps ramp up the tension.
